A man police say is the leader of a violent gang was indicted by an Oahu grand jury yesterday with first-degree criminal property damage and two counts of second-degree assault.

The charges against Shaw Awber, 18, stem from two attacks on Dec. 7.

In the first, police said, Awber used a baseball bat to damage a car parked near Kalakaua District Park in Kapalama. Two males were sleeping inside.

When one of the males tried to exit the vehicle, Awber hit him on the arm and leg with the bat, said Vickie Kapp, deputy prosecutor.

In the second incident, police said, the two males from the vehicle were later walking near the park when Awber hit the same victim on the head with a golf club so hard that the club head broke off. Awber then tried to stab his victim with the broken shaft, Kapp said.

Awber is already awaiting trial for second-degree assault for a May 1 baseball bat attack on another man at the park.

Also, police have identified him as the gunman who shot 10 rounds at a pickup truck full of teenage girls June 29 on the H-1 freeway. For that he is facing attempted first- and second-degree murder charges. He is also facing car break-in charges, Kapp said.

Awber was 17 years old at the time of the offenses. A Family Court judge waived jurisdiction last Thursday, allowing police and prosecutors to charge him as an adult.
