West Oahu clinches division

Arizona Diamondbacks prospect Cyle Hankerd hit a grand slam and the West Oahu CaneFires beat the Waikiki BeachBoys 6-3 in Hawaii Winter Baseball last night at Hans L'Orange Park.

The win clinched a spot for West Oahu in Sunday's championship game. The CaneFires will face the winner of the West Division between Waikiki and Honolulu.

» Christopher Kissock walked Yamico Navarro with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the North Shore Honu over the Honolulu Sharks 5-4.

 

Ah Yat enters Linfield Hall of Fame

Honolulu's Tony Ah Yat was inducted into the Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame last weekend.

Ah Yat was a four-year football starter at defensive end and a member of the 1961, '62 and '64 conference title teams. As a graduate student, he helped coach the team to the NAIA Championship final in 1965. He twice earned NAIA District II honors and was a three-time Pacific Coast All-Star. As a senior, he received NAIA and Associated Press All-America honors.

Ah Yat worked as a teacher for 34 years before retiring in 2004. He coached at six schools, including Kalani, where he became the winningest coach in school history from 1971 to '76, and Kamehameha, his alma mater.

 

Bode advances in Honolulu Futures

Hawaii Pacific's Hendrik Bode advanced in the main draw of the Honolulu Futures tennis tournament yesterday, defeating Chris Wettengel 1-6. 7-6 (5), 6-2.

Hawaii senior Sascha Heinemann lost to fifth-seeded Andrey Kumantsov 6-3, 6-3, and local player Ikaika Jobe lost to Australian Matt Reid 6-4, 7-5.

The tournament continues today at 10 a.m.

 

Kua tied for the lead at Turtle Bay

Hawaii freshman T.J. Kua shot a 5-under 67 to tie for the lead after two rounds of the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate yesterday.

Kua, a four-time Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion, is tied with San Diego State's Johan Carlsson. The Aztecs are tied for first place in the team standings with UNLV, and Hawaii sits in eighth place, 13 shots back.

UH's Robert Berton struggled to a 2-over 74 yesterday, but is still in contention at 1 under after two rounds. He's in a tie for 17th place.

The tournament concludes today with two rounds beginning at 7:30 a.m.
