Tomoyuki Raymond Sekiya, former chairman of the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii and former chairman of Kuakini Health System, received the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays from the Consulate-general of Japan in Honolulu. The award was given for his contribution to enhancing the lives of Japanese-Americans and strengthening the friendship between the U.S. and Japan.

  The Hawaii campus of Argosy University appointed Kawika Kane associate director of the university outreach program. His main responsibility is to create business, community, employment and education opportunities for students.

  The Freeman Foundation provided an additional $1.2 million this year that enables students at University of Hawaii community colleges to spend a semester in China, Japan, Korea or Vietnam. They immerse themselves in the native language and participate in service learning projects.

  Lanakila Meals on Wheels, which provides free meals for needy seniors on Oahu, received a $2,500 challenge grant from the Pilot Club of Honolulu to support its mission during the holidays and throughout the year. The Matching Grant Program is designed to provide an incentive to individuals and businesses to donate to Lanakila Meals on Wheels.
