Guest Falletta conducts radio, preview talks

Guest conductor JoAnn Falletta makes two special appearances this week, before she picks up the baton to lead the Honolulu Symphony in a set of weekend concerts.

On Wednesday, Falletta will be Gene Schiller's guest on the Hawaii Public Radio show “;Symphony Spectrum,”; with its focus on symphony artists and conductors.

Falletta will discuss this weekend's concert series in a live broadcast from 9 to 10 a.m. during “;Morning Cafe.”; The combination-talk-show-and-music format will highlight the symphony's program of Sibelius' Symphony No. 2 and Rodrigo's “;Fantasia para un Gentilhombre.”;

Listen in on KHPR 88.1 FM, Honolulu; K203EL 88.5 FM, Haleiwa and Schofield Barracks; KKUA 90.7 FM, Wailuku (serving Maui, Molokai, Lanai and North Hawaii); and KANO 91.1 FM, Hilo.

The series continues Dec. 10, with the symphony's principal conductor, Andreas Delfs, discussing the seventh concert in the Halekulani MasterWorks season, which includes Prokofiev's “;Peter and the Wolf”; and Stravinsky's “;Firebird.”;

 

Concert preview

On Thursday, Falletta hosts a concert preview for members of the Honolulu Symphony Associates, from 10 a.m. to noon at Nauru Tower's recreation area, 1330 Ala Moana Blvd.

Admission is free to members; nonmembers may attend by paying annual dues of $35 at the event, or downloading a membership form at http://www.HonoluluSymphony.com (click on “;Support the Symphony”;).

The previews are presented in advance of select symphony performances. Light refreshments are served.

Membership in the Symphony Associates also includes invitations to open rehearsals and other special events. The group's mission is to provide financial and volunteer support for the symphony, as well as to provide supplementary educational opportunities.
