LAS CRUCES, N.M. » La'Auli Fonoti (Kahuku, '05) doesn't have to look far to find a face from home.

Since moving from outside linebacker to nose guard three games ago, Fonoti now lines up next to tackle Oren Long (Saint Louis, '04) in the middle of New Mexico State's starting defensive front.

“;Some of our D-linemen were getting injured, so they started moving people around and I happened to be one of the bigger linebackers, so they put my hand on the ground and let me rush,”; said Fonoti, who is slated to start against Hawaii in tomorrow's Western Athletic Conference game in Las Cruces.

“;It's just working with the other D-linemen and watching film over and over and catch up to them.”;

It hasn't taken Fonoti long to make an impact up front, becoming a playmaker with 17 tackles, including two for losses, in the middle of the line.

“;We needed to get a bigger frame on the field and Uli was the best player to fit that role,”; said NMSU associate head coach and defensive line coach Mike Fanoga. “;He has a quick step and is naturally strong, and has good instincts to the ball.”;

Along with Fonoti and Long, Dylan Moss (Saint Louis, '05) has also started two games at nose guard and is part of a group of 10 players from Hawaii on the Aggies' roster.

Fanoga was familiar with Fonoti from recruiting his older brother, Toniu, when Fanoga and NMSU head coach Hal Mumme were at Kentucky. Toniu ended up at Nebraska, but the ties they formed helped La'Auli's decision to move to Las Cruces for college, as did the island presence on the Aggies roster.

“;The boys from Hawaii help me stay focused,”; Fonoti said. “;It always makes me work harder.”;

» Navy senior quarterback Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada (Kapolei '04) rushed for 64 yards and a touchdown and completed three of four passes for 19 yards in a 33-27 overtime victory against Temple.
