Dinner with Olympian to be auctioned
Dinner with Olympic Decathlon champion Bryan Clay will be among items up for bid at Hospice Hawaii's benefit, Na Hoa Malama, 6 to 10 p.m. Nov. 15 at Waialae Country Club.

A silent auction will include dinner for 10 at Brasserie Du Vin with Clay.
The event will include a tasting of more than 50 wines and a selection of cognacs and Pau Maui Vodka.
The evening's Hall of Heroes will recognize hospice patients Thomas Kaulukukui, University of Hawaii football player and coach; journalist John Griffin; businessman John Kelley and teacher Amy Bruhl.
Tickets are $100; with tables available for $1,000 to $5,000.

A sort of Facebook or “;placebook,”; if you will, it's described by editor Deborah Needleman as an “;inspiration book, but online.”; The Internet tool lets you save all your decorating ideas in one place, and gives you an option to share pictures and browse other users' muses and ideas.

Green House holds composting workshops
The Keiki Explorer club will take some tips from wiggly worms tomorrow when The Green House presents a workshop from 1:30 to 3 p.m. about waste and composting. Children will learn how to make a worm “;home”; out of recycled containers, and how organic waste can be made into compost by feeding it to worms that eat scraps, cardboard, newspaper and junk mail.
Geared for ages 4 and up, the cost is $12 per parent-child team or $6 per person.
Then, from 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 15, organic gardener Evelyn Giddings will teach participants how to build and harvest a compost pile. The class will also be given a detailed booklet of composting methods.

Workshop incorporates splendor of fall leaves
In Hawaii, the concept of autumn leaves seems an ocean away. But the “;Leaves, Leaves, Leaves”; workshop being held tomorrow just might change that perception.
Sponsored by the Honolulu Board of Water Supply, the workshop is for parents and keiki 5 to 10 years old to learn all about autumn leaves that have adapted to a dry environment and how the leaves help to conserve water.
The 10 to 11:30 a.m. session will be filled with storytelling, “;xeri-leaf”; wreath crafting, and creating animals using leaves.

Seminar discusses building a dream home
The next free “;Building Your Dream Home”; educational seminar presented by Graham Builders will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Honolulu Country Club.

Craft workshop uses 'air plant' for displays
Get into the holiday spirit with the Board of Water Supply's tillandsia holiday craft workshop Nov. 15.
Marty Lum will teach how to use the xerophytic tillandsia, also known as an “;air plant,”; to create attractive multiholiday wreaths and centerpieces.
Cost for the 10 a.m.-to-noon class being held at the Halawa Xeriscape Garden is $15 and includes plants and supplies. Glue guns, scissors and other supplies will be available to share. However, participants are encouraged to bring their own tools and their own holiday decorations as well to personalize their designs.

Fall rose show offers public chance to vote
The Honolulu Rose Society presents its fall rose show from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 15 at Kahala Mall.
The public will have a chance to vote in the Most Fragrant Rose category.
Rose entries must be received no later than 9 a.m. Exhibitors must be amateurs who grow their own roses, and all entries must be correctly named and labeled or will be ineligible for ribbon awards.

Wailuku woman places in Duck brand contest
Stacy Baqui of Wailuku has won second place out of hundreds who entered the Duck brand Moving Made Easy Contest, taking home a $1,500 prize.
The Henkel Corp. asked people to share their best tips for a smooth move. Baqui offered one that helps make the move with children easier by playing music and packing each room separately, then labeling and color-coding the boxes for each room.
First-place prize of $2,500 went to Tina Rath of Fayetteville, N.C., for her suggestion of labeling and numbering boxes. She packs “;breakfast”; items in a box labeled No. 1, keeping it accessible during the move so that it will be easy to find and prepare breakfast in the first days of settling in.
Third-place prize of $750 went to Heather Simone of Roswell, Ga. who said advanced planning was key to a successful move.

Local artist’s Miao stars in show
Local artist Zakkamono has teamed with Subtext Gallery in San Diego to present a custom vinyl show featuring Zakkamono's Miao and Mousubi toys as reimagined by 50 artists from around the globe.
Miao is an updated vinyl version of the Japanese maneki neko lucky cat, and Mousubi is his musubi-shaped sidekick.
Participating artists include tokidoki, Hawaii's Angry Woebot, Mar Hernandiez, Shawnimals, Matias Vigliano, and more. The show continues through Dec. 7, and the works will be available at the gallery and online at www.zakkamono.com.

Former sumotori Konishiki—real name Saleva'a Atisano'e and now a recording artist—performs free Sunday on the Plaza Stage at Waikiki Beach Walk.
He'll appear with other artists from his H-POP Label, singing and signing CDs.
The performance runs from 2:30 to 3:20 p.m., with a half-hour autograph session at 3:45 p.m.
Aquarium offers keiki craft class
The Waikiki Aquarium is offering to help kids give their holiday craft projects an ocean theme in a Veteran's Day activity Tuesday.
The Ocean Arts! class for ages 6 and up will cover clay ornaments, printmaking for greeting cards or gift tags, and a 3D scrapbook or calendar.
The class runs from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Cost is $10; $8 for aquarium members. Call 923-9741.
Humane society needs pet toys
Pet toys provide stimulation, mental activity and a positive way of sharing quality time—just a few reasons that the Hawaiian Humane Society is seeking the donation of new toys for homeless pets.
The goal is to collect 500 toys so that each pet adopted during the holiday season can be sent to a new home with a bagful of toys. Suitable toys for dogs include Kong toys, Nylabones and sterilized beef bones. Cat toys should not include string.

Win up to $600 in playwriting contest
Kumu Kahua Theatre is co-sponsoring a playwriting contest with the University of Hawaii at Manoa Theatre and Dance Department.
Prizes will be awarded in three categories:
» The “;Hawaii Prize”; ($600), open to residents and non-residents, is for a play set in Hawaii or dealing with an aspect of the Hawaii experience.
» The “;Pacific/Rim Prize”; ($450), open to residents and non-residents, must be set in the Pacific Islands or the Pacific Rim, or deal with the Pacific/Asian American experience.
» The “;Resident Prize”; ($250) is for residents of Hawaii, for plays on any topic.

Abe Lincoln theme of poster contest
The Hawaii State Library is conducting a poster contest in conjunction with an Abraham Lincoln traveling exhibit, scheduled to be displayed from March 11 to April 6.
Students are invited to design posters that depict the topic of “;Abraham Lincoln: A Man of His Time; A Man for All Times.”;
Judging will be in three categories: kindergarden to grade 5; grades 6 to 8; and high school. Deadline is Jan. 24. Winning entries will be displayed from February to March.
The library is one of the 40 nationwide selected to show the exhibit, which covers Lincoln's life and constitutional legacy.
