UH's Deptula one of WAC’s best

Hawaii sophomore Chelsea Deptula was named the Western Athletic Conference's offensive player of the week.

Deptula, who prepped at Mililani, scored the game-winning goal in Hawaii's win over Boise State last week.

She is second on the team with five goals despite playing defense.

Utah State's Lindsey Smart is the defensive player of the week.

The Rainbow Wahine take on Nevada in the first round of the WAC tournament on Thursday at Reno, Nev.

 

Spartans lead Kauai Collegiate

San Jose State took the first-round lead in the Kauai Collegiate Invitational golf tournament with a 1-under 283 yesterday at Puakea Golf Course.

The Spartans have a one-shot lead over Drake.

Mark Hubbard of San Jose State holds the individual lead at 5-under 66.

Hawaii is in 12th place out of 14 teams at 11-over 295. Thomas Kua of UH is tied for 15th at even-par 71.

 

Abubo eliminated from Peru contest

Hawaii's Megan Abubo placed third in both her first- and second-round heats yesterday and was eliminated from the Movistar Classic surf contest in Mancora, Peru.

Abubo lost to Stephanie Gilmore and Anali Gomez in the first round and couldn't get past Katrina Petroni and Laurina McGrath in the second round of the Association of Professionals World Championship Tour event.

 

Turnquest earns bronze in judo

Honolulu's Robert Turnquest earned a bronze medal at the Benito Juarez Judo Championships last weekend in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico.

Turnquest, who fights out of Kamehameha Judo, went 2-1 in the 81kg division to finish third.

Vulcans blank Argonauts in soccer

Megan Pachecano, Chelsea Gomez and Alyssa Salvador scored for Hawaii-Hilo in a 3-0 women's soccer win over Notre Dame de Namur yesterday at Keaau High.

Adele Letro assisted on Pachecano's goal that broke a scoreless tie for the Vulcans (13-6, 8-3 Pacific West Conference) in the 62nd minute.

The Argonauts dropped to 9-9 and 6-4.

» Emily Mearns and Natalie Cude scored for Brigham Young-Hawaii in a 2-1 women's soccer win over Dixie State College of Utah yesterday in Laie.

Wendy Stratford had the only goal for the Rebels.

BYUH (8-2 in the PacWest), tied for first place with Hawaii-Hilo (8-3) with 16 points each, are trying to repeat as conference champions.

» Brian Noguera had the only goal of the match as Brigham Young-Hawaii topped Dixie State College of Utah 1-0 in men's soccer yesterday in Laie.

» Kaylen Jackson scored two goals to lead Grand Canyon past Chaminade 5-0 in women's soccer yesterday in Honolulu.

» Matheau Hall scored two goals for the Grand Canyon men's team in a 5-0 win over Chaminade yesterday in Honolulu.
