The Maui Historical Society was awarded $5,000 by the Dowling Community Improvement Foundation to hold its annual benefit concert for Bailey House Museum. The eighth annual “;E Ho'oulu Aloha—To Grow In Love”; benefit has also received funds from the Boeing Co., $3,000; Aloha Recycling, $2,500; and Maui No Ka Oi Magazine, $2,500.
The state Department of Health received a three-year, $1.5 million grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration for youth suicide prevention.
The University of Hawaii KIDS FIRST! Film Festival, under curator-director Ann Brandman, received the “;1st Community Film Series”; award from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles. About 1,175 children and adults viewed the films this year.
Four members of the Ocean Safety Bureau staff on Kauai were promoted, including Randy Ortiz, former supervisor of the west district, now a training officer; Norman Hunter, east district supervisor; Gerald Hurd, southwest district supervisor; and Mark McKamey, north district supervisor. Also recognized were three new staff members: water safety officer Jeffery McIntosh and lifeguards Jeffery Maddox and Garret Stevens.
