Sharks sighted near surf spots

Lifeguards posted warning signs at two North Shore beaches yesterday after spotting sharks within an hour.

Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokesman Bryan Cheplic said a Sunset Beach lifeguard saw a 6- to 8-foot shark at about 3:30 p.m. near Kammie Land, a surf spot, and posted warning signs until 5:30 p.m.

About 45 minutes after the first sighting, a Waimea Bay lifeguard spotted a 7-foot shark while helping with an overturned catamaran 500 yards offshore.

Shark signs were posted overnight at Waimea Bay, and lifeguards will reassess the area this morning, Cheplic said.

The catamaran operator was rescued and the vessel brought back to shore.

2 women were last seen on Big Island

Big Island police are still looking for a woman whose car was found at the bottom of a 120-foot cliff in Hakalau on Oct. 10. Marlo Moku, 33, of Hilo was last seen at a convenience store in the lower Kaumana Drive area on Sept. 23.

Her photo was among those of seven people—some missing for more than a year—featured on “;Hawaii Island's Most Wanted,”; a show on Na Leo O Hawaii, Channel 54.

Another, Patricia Alene Kenny, 57, of Port Townsend, Wash., was last seen in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision of Puna on Aug. 30. Her rental car was found four days later in Nanawale Estates.

Suspect charged in officer's assault

Police have charged a 27-year-old man who allegedly hit a police officer twice with a car while trying to flee an Ala Moana check cashing business last month.

Aaron Capello, of no local address, is being held on charges including first-degree attempted assault. His bail was set at $100,000.

On Oct. 21, police responded to Money Mart at 435 Atkinson Drive after Capello allegedly tried to cash a suspicious check.

When a 37-year-old police officer arrived, Capello tried to drive off and hit the officer twice, police said.

He sped down Kahakai Drive and, abandoning the car, ran off, police said. On Oct. 24, Capello was arrested at 98-0175 Kaonohi St., but later released him pending investigation.

Capello was arrested again Saturday after he was released from the hospital for an unrelated injury and charged later that day.
