LOGAN, Utah » Burned by a 58-yard field goal in the final moments of last week's game against Fresno State, Utah State learned not to play with fire yesterday afternoon against Hawaii.

The Aggies' special teams squad blocked both of the Warriors' field-goal attempts, the defense tightened up any time Hawaii neared the end zone and the Utah State offense managed to eat up time and yards, and add points every time the visitors seemed poised to make a run.

“;The game was won as a team effort, and it feels great,”; Utah State cornerback Roy Hurst said after the Aggies' 30-14 victory. “;We know we're a team that can compete with anybody that's on our schedule. Sometimes we prove it, and sometimes we don't.”;

Last week, Utah State held a 28-27 lead on Fresno State with 38 seconds to go, but the Aggies allowed the Bulldogs to get close enough to take a shot at a game-winning field goal with 2 seconds left. Freshman kicker Kevin Goessling responded by booting a school-record 58-yarder for a 30-28 victory.

Having a rare win over a good team ripped from their grasp was difficult for the Aggies to deal with, but they clearly managed to shake off the disappointment. After opening the game with an 11-play drive that resulted in a 34-yard field goal by Peter Caldwell, the home team never surrendered the lead. The Warriors responded with a 12-play, 73-yard drive, but after securing a first down at the 3-yard line, Hawaii's offense was denied the end zone and Dan Kelly's 26-yard field goal attempt was blocked by linebacker Paul Igboeli.

Hurst also blocked a 49-yard attempt by Kelly in the second quarter, and Igboeli recovered a fumble by Daniel Libre at the Utah State 4-yard line early in the third quarter.

“;We blocked kicks on fourth down, had fourth-down stops and we scored every time we were in the red zone, while they were just one of five in the red zone,”; Utah State coach Brent Guy noted. “;I think that's the difference in the ball game when you look at it.”;

Although Hawaii had more first downs (21 to 17) and more total yards (374 to 368), the Aggies turned the ball over just once (backup quarterback Sean Setzer's lone pass attempt was tipped by an Aggie receiver and snared by Jameel Dowling in the second quarter) and Caldwell connected on all three of his field-goal attempts from 34, 34 and 21 yards.

“;They had more yardage than we had, but not more points and that's what counts in the end,”; Guy declared. “;The defense did a tremendous job, and we scored 30 points on them, too. It was an all-around good victory.”;
