”;Native Men Remade: Gender and Nation in Contemporary Hawaii”;

; By Ty P. Kawika Tengan / Duke University Press / $22.95

Seeking to tackle the problems faced by native Hawaiian men in the face of colonization and modern life in Hawaii, this book is the story of Hale Mua (the “;Men's House”;).

The author, a native Hawaiian scholar and member of Hale Mua himself, tells the story of how members seek to discover themselves as native Hawaiian men through membership in this group. Through participation in ancient practices such as martial arts and cultural ceremonies, they come to find their identities.

Beginning with a history of Hawaii and the impacts of foreigners on Hawaiian culture, we can see how the men have come to question their roles in modern society.

The author makes extensive use of interviews and first-person narratives from the members, which makes for a rich learning experience.
