Wahine win soccer game on road

Mari Punzal and Chelsea Deptula each scored a goal and the Hawaii soccer team earned its first conference road win of the season, 2-1 over Boise State.

Deptula broke a tie in the 72nd minute when she headed home a pass from Nicole Mikula for her second game-winning goal of the season. Kori Lu had three saves for UH in goal and the defense allowed only four shots.

Hawaii improved to 7-6-4 and 3-2-1 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Broncos fell to 9-7-2 (2-3-1 WAC). The Rainbow Wahine close the regular season when they visit Idaho tomorrow.

Posey leads Waikiki to victory

San Francisco prospect Buster Posey had a pair of hits to help Waikiki beat West Oahu 3-2 in Hawaii Winter Baseball at Hans L'Orange Field in Waipahu.

Posey, the fifth overall pick in the 2008 draft out of Florida State, improved his average in the league to .512 (21-for-41).

Yuhei Takai of Japan pitched five scoreless innings with five strikeouts to earn his second win of the season. Jeremy Papelbon of the Chicago Cubs got the last out of the game to earn his league-leading fourth save.

Pittsburgh Pirates lefty Kyle Bloom was the hard-luck loser for West Oahu, throwing five scoreless innings before Baltimore Orioles pitcher Clifford Flagello allowed three runs in the sixth inning.

» Kyle Martin hit a home run in the first inning and North Shore cruised past Honolulu 5-1 at Les Murakami Stadium.

Wright honored for academics

BYU-Hawaii soccer player Stefanie Wright has been named to ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-District College Division Team for Region VII, encompassing the Western United States.

The sophomore defender from Vista, Calif., carries a 3.95 grade-point average majoring in elementary and special education.

Wright is the only PacWest conference player to be honored on either the first or second teams, which include players from NCAA II, NCAA III, NAIA, and two-year institutions.
