Hawaii Swimming Hall of Fame will open its doors to 17 athletes

Olympic water polo player Sean Kern and three-time NCAA champion swimmer Fred Haywood are among the 17 who will be inducted into the Hawaii Swimming Hall of Fame tomorrow.

The induction banquet for the Hall's fourth class begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Hale Koa Hotel's DeRussy Room.

Kern (Punahou '97) was a four-time All-American at UCLA and a member of the 2000 U.S. Olympic team. Haywood, who attended Hawaii Prep, captained the Stanford swim team in 1970-71 and won NCAA titles in the 100 back and 400 medley.

Other inductees in swimming are: Ivanelle Hoe (Roosevelt '55), a University of Hawaii swimmer and national indoor 250 breast champion; Dr. Herbert Kobayashi (Saint Louis '47), three-time All-American and captain of Ohio State's 1952 NCAA title team; and Jerry Miki (Roosevelt '56), two-time All-American and NCAA champion at in the 400 medley relay at Indiana.

Recognized for channel/ocean swimming are: Betty Ann Barnett (Punahou '64) FINA World Swimmer of 2006 and holder of several world and U.S. masters records; James Caldwell, the first solo swimmer across the Auau and Pailolo channels; Linda Kaiser, who has swum seven of the channels in the Hawaiian Islands chain; and Mike Spalding (Hawaii Prep '65), the first to swim the Kaulakahi and Kealaikahiki channels among his seven channel swims.

Masters swimmers to be honored are:

Spencer Eldred, U.S. Masters and FINA Masters champion; the late Lloyd Osborne, who began the Hawaii Masters swimming program in the early 1970s; and Cappy Sheeley (Punahou '59) junior college All-American and age-group champion and record-holder at the national level.

Recognized for contributions to the sport are:

Charles Dwight III, past president of U.S. Water Polo-Hawaii and a force behind the creation of the Hawaiian Invitational Water Polo Tournament; Dr. Ralph Hale, former vice president of the U.S. Olympic Committee and USA Water Polo Hall of Fame inductee; his wife, June Hale, instrumental in women's water polo becoming an Olympic sport; the late Harry Mamizuka (Farrington '41), longtime swim coach at Palama Settlement and Kaimuki and McKinley high schools, and founder of Manoa Aquatic Club; and Dr. Hiroshi Yamauchi, founder and chair of the Hawaii Swimming Legacy Project.
