State, Pro Bowl negotiating

Hawaii tourism officials say they are in negotiations to extend the state's contract to host the Pro Bowl.

The state's five-year contract, which pays the NFL about $4 million a game, expires with the 2009 Pro Bowl.

Lloyd Unebasami, interim head of the Hawaii Tourism Authority, confirmed the negotiations but declined further comment yesterday.

There had been speculation the all-star game could be moved to another host city. Under the current contract, the league could have moved the game in 2009, so long as it returned to Hawaii in 2010, but decided to stay in the islands

 

Honu skip past CaneFires in HWB

Kyle Martin hit a three-run homer in the third inning to wipe out a one-run deficit and lift North Shore over West Oahu 6-3 yesterday in Hawaii Winter Baseball at Hans L'Orange Park.

Chris Hicks, a Houston Astros prospect, notched the win after pitching 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief for the Honu (10-14).

Tyler Henson gave the CaneFires (12-12) a short-lived 3-2 lead with a three-run triple.

» Damon Sublett hit a two-run homer and the Waikiki beat Honolulu 5-2 last night at Hans L'Orange Park.

The BeachBoys moved into a tie with the Sharks in the East standings. Both teams are 13-11.

 

Pearl City, Kalani in bowling lead

The Pearl City boys and Kalani girls took the first-day leads in the Hawaii High School Athletic Association state bowling tournament yesterday at the Lihue Bowling Center.

The Falcons lead the girls competition after six games with 4,920 pins. Kapolei is in second with 4,889, followed by Hilo in third place with 4,648.

The Chargers lead the boys event after three games with 3,007 pins. They're followed by Waiakea (2,997) and Hawaii Baptist Academy (2,637).

The top three girls are Kalani's Dara Ajimine (1,177), Sacred Hearts' Venny Jean Turner (1,113) and Pearl City's Ashley Shoemaker (1,081).

Kalani's David Goo (647) is the boys leader, followed by Waiakea's Ethan Nakano (646) and Pearl City's Micah Lee (644).

The two-day competition ends today.

BYUH is coaches pick for first place

Brigham Young-Hawaii was picked by Pacific West Conference coaches yesterday to finish first in men's basketball this season.

The coaches also picked Chaminade to finish second, Hawaii-Hilo fourth and Hawaii Pacific fifth.

In addition, four from Hawaii colleges were chosen to the preseason all-conference team, including preseason player of the year Lucas Alves of the Seasiders. The other three are Jay DeMaestri and John Smith of the Vulcans, and Jason Curtis of the Sea Warriors.

» BYUH was picked by the conference coaches to finish third in women's basketball.

The coaches also chose Hawaii Pacific to finish fourth, Hawaii-Hilo sixth and Chaminade seventh.

The Vulcans' Sheila Azevedo and the Seasiders Latoya Wily made the preseason team along with conference preseason player of the year, Rosalyn Nelson of Grand Canyon.

 

HPU routs Chaminade in soccer

Hawaii Pacific downed Chaminade 6-1 in men's soccer yesterday in Honolulu.

Mark Rogers, Chance Bukoski and Cory Harding scored first-half goals for the Sea Warriors (9-5-1, 7-2), who took over first place in the conference.

Chad Thompson scored the only goal for the Silverswords (1-15-1).

» The Hawaii Pacific women's team also won by a 6-1 score over Chaminade yesterday in Honolulu.

Tami Kalaiwaa led the way for the Sea Warriors (4-12) with two goals.

The Silverswords dropped to 1-12.

» Emily Mearns scored in overtime to give Brigham Young-Hawaii a 1-0 women's soccer victory over Hawaii-Hilo yesterday at Hilo.

The Seasiders improved to 13-4 and 7-2, and the Vulcans dropped to 12-5 and 7-2.

» Drew Geis scored in overtime to lift Hawaii-Hilo to a 1-0 victory over Brigham Young-Hawaii yesterday at Hilo.

The Vulcans improved to 9-4-2 overall and 4-3-2 in the PacWest, and the Seasiders dropped to 4-10-2 and 2-5-2.
