Whitney Viveiros' parents are going to have a hard time coming up with a better birthday present.

Kamehameha's senior outside hitter hammered the match-ending kill on her 18th birthday last night to give the Warriors a 25-15, 25-22, 25-23 sweep over Punahou at Kekuhaupio Gym. It gave the Warriors the Interscholastic League of Honolulu postseason tournament championship and forced a playoff for the overall league title.

“;That's the best birthday gift ever,”; said Viveiros, who finished with 10 kills. “;We came out firing tonight and played with our hearts.”;

Both Kamehameha and Punahou, winners of 15 of the last 17 state titles, had already clinched berths in the state tournament.

All that is left to be decided is the outright ILH champion. Punahou (16-2), which won the regular-season title in a playoff against the Warriors (16-2), needed a win to clinch the league title. Instead, the teams play for the fourth time this season on Saturday to determine the champion.

“;We played pretty well tonight, but we can still play better,”; Kamehameha coach Chris Blake said. “;We'll get back in the gym (today) and get ready for Saturday.”;

Taylor Akana paced the Warriors with a match-high 14 kills and setter Caitlin Andrade kept the Buffanblu off balance with 40 assists.

Andrade, who showcased a wide array of sets from all angles, spread the ball around to a variety of teammates. Five different Warriors had at least five kills, keeping the Punahou block guessing.

“;This was definitely one of our better games,”; Andrade said. “;We played really steady, our passing was great, and our hitters executed fantastically.”;

Punahou standout Anuhea Keanini wasn't nearly as effective as she was when the teams last met. After going for 11 kills, 18 assists and 12 digs in Punahou's three-set victory Oct. 14, she was held to six kills and hit below .100 for the match.

“;She's so talented, when you play her she's going to get kills,”; Blake said. “;She might not have had the stats, but her overall play and all the things she does out there really helps her team.”;

After being steamrolled in the opening set, Punahou stayed close in the second set, but couldn't overcome six service errors. Neither team led by more than three points in the third set, and Punahou took a 21-20 lead before a mix-up in its rotation cost them a point. Kelia Parrilla came up with a big ace and Viveiros put down Kamehameha's final two kills to finish the sweep.

“;All credit to them, they played great,”; Punahou coach Jim Iams said. “;We were lucky just to be close in games 2 and 3.”;
