2 held in attack on Big Island man

HILO » Big Island police are holding a man, 34, and a woman, 28, on charges of attempted murder after arresting them in an alleged attack on Isaac Couchie at his Ocean View home about 11 p.m. Sunday.

Police said the male suspect lured Couchie out of his house, ran into him with his sport utility vehicle as Couchie rode his motorcycle down his driveway, and then hit him in the head with a football-sized rock. The motive was not revealed.

Neighbors called 911 when they heard cries for help. Couchie, 33, was taken to the Queen's Medical Center, where he is in stable condition.

The woman was arrested Monday and the male suspect was arrested yesterday.

Motorcycle crash kills Maui teen

WAILUKU » A Maui teenager died Monday after the motorcycle he was riding crashed into another vehicle in Haiku.

Keoni Magliato, 17, was driving the motorcycle at 4:41 p.m. when he crashed into the vehicle at the intersection of Kauhikoa Road and Kauhikoalani Place in Haiku, police said.

Police said Magliato was not wearing a helmet.

Maui police Lt. Robert Hill said the driver of the vehicle was a 33-year-old Haiku man but declined to release details of the crash, pending further investigation.

Hill said neither the driver of the other vehicle nor his two passengers were injured.

Magliato's death was Maui County's 17th traffic fatality this year, compared with 19 at the same time last year, and the eighth fatal crash involving a motorcycle this year.

Fall from balcony injures Hilo teen

HILO » A 14-year-old boy at Waiakea High School in Hilo fell over a second-floor balcony railing Monday and landed on a concrete bench, apparently suffering only minor injuries, Hawaii County police authorities said.

His name was not released.

Department of Education spokeswoman Sandy Goya said the boy was “;doing fine”; and had been released from Hilo Medical Center.

The incident took place during the morning recess. The school is continuing its investigation, she said.

Following the incident, the boy was awake, responsive, and had feeling in his limbs, police said.

Hawaii County Fire Department paramedics said no bleeding was seen, but the boy complained of pain in his chest.

Paramedics took him to the hospital for treatment. There was no indication of foul play, police said.

Kauai motorcyclist injured in crash

LIHUE » A Lihue man was hospitalized after flipping his motorcycle on Kaumualii Highway Monday, county officials said.

At 1:20 p.m., Kyle Masuda, 37, jammed on his front brakes when a pickup truck in front of him suddenly slowed in heavy westbound traffic, causing the motorcycle and Masuda to flip over and land on the highway near Halfway Bridge, officials added.

He was taken in fair condition to Wilcox Hospital.

He was wearing a helmet, and police said they believe that speed may have been a factor in the accident.

Man arrested in fight with in-law

Police arrested a 24-year-old man who allegedly punched his father-in-law during an argument, causing minor injuries.

At about 3:40 p.m., the suspect and his 63-year-old father-in-law were arguing over the younger man borrowing the older man's vehicle at a Waipahu home, police said. During the argument the suspect punched his father-in-law in the head, police said.

The victim was taken to Hawaii Medical Center West for treatment. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault.

Teenager accused of stealing purse

Police arrested a 17-year-old boy who allegedly stole a woman's purse at a bus stop early yesterday.

Police said that about 12:15 a.m., a 20-year-old woman was sitting at a bus stop in the Waianae area when the suspect approached her and demanded her purse. The woman complied and the suspect fled.

Police found the suspect nearby and arrested him on suspicion of second-degree robbery. Police recovered the purse.

Witness helps foil alleged car thieves

An alert Waipahu woman helped police catch two suspected car thieves.

The woman saw two men drive into her Kuhaulua Street apartment complex Monday. Later, about 4 p.m., she saw the same men driving into the parking lot in separate cars and called police.

Officers checked the cars and learned that each had been reported stolen from two women.

Police arrested the men, ages 27 and 38, on suspicion of auto theft and outstanding warrants.

WINDWARD OAHU

Alleged thief also faces gun charge

Police arrested a 22-year-old man after an officer found a gun inside a compartment of a stolen mo-ped the man was driving.

Police said the officer stopped the man for a traffic violation in Kailua at about 3:40 p.m. yesterday. The officer then learned that the mo-ped had been reported stolen by a 19-year-old man.

When processing the mo-ped, officers found an unregistered pistol in its storage compartment, police said. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of auto theft, and two firearm violations.
