Hallberg’s double lifts CaneFires

Mark Hallberg hit a two-run double to left field in the top of the 10th inning to lead West Oahu over North Shore 8-2 in Hawaii Winter Baseball at Hans L'Orange Field.

The CaneFires tacked on four more runs after Hallberg's hit broke a 2-2 tie.

Hallberg finished with three RBIs, and Kyle Peter went 4-for-5 to lead the CaneFires (12-10).

Matt McBride had a solo homer for the Honu (8-14).

West Oahu starter Chris Cody held North Shore scoreless through five innings, and Moises Robles earned the win with 1 2/3 scoreless innings.

» In the second game, Buster Posey went 2-for-3, driving in three runs as Waikiki outslugged Honoululu 12-9.

Alfredo Silverio added three singles and scored three times, James McOwen doubled and tripled with three RBIs, and Todd Frazier hit a two-run homer for the BeachBoys (11-11).

Kazunori Yamamoto (2-0) pitched 2 1/3 hitless innings for the win and Jeremy Papelbon got the last out for his third save.

Bradley Emaus hit a solo homer for the Sharks (13-9).

 

Hemmings honored for 1968 surf title

Hawaii state senator Fred Hemmings will be the featured guest at the Huntington Beach (Calif.) International Surfing Museum's event commemorating the 40th anniversary of Hemmings' world championship on Saturday.

Hemmings won the title at the 1968 meet in Rincon, Puerto Rico, which was one of the first televised surfing events. The museum will also open its special exhibit dedicated to the event Saturday.

» Hawaii's Fred Patacchia won his first-round heat yesterday to advance to the third round of the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro in Brazil yesterday.

Kauai's Roy Powers placed third in his three-man heat and moved on to the second round of the Association of Surfing Professionals World Championship Tour event.

 

Wahine in 12th place at Youel tourney

Hawaii is in 12th place in the Kent Youel Invitational yesterday after two rounds at the Kapolei Golf Course.

San Francisco leads the 15-team field at 5-under 571.

The Rainbow Wahine shot rounds of 305 and 306 and are well off the pace.

Jan Chin of UC Irvine is the individual leader at 10-under 134. Hawaii's Carolina Perez is tied for 35th at 8-over 152.

Hawaii Pacific stops BYUH in soccer

Chance Bukoski headed in a free kick by Linus Ekden in the 89th minute to give Hawaii Pacific a 2-1 men's soccer victory over Brigham Young-Hawaii yesterday at Laie.

Adam Maciejewski had the lone goal for the Seasiders (3-9-2, 2-4-2).

The Sea Warriors (8-5-1, 2-4-2) also got a goal from Isaiah Guth.

» The BYUH women's team defeated Hawaii Pacific 5-1 yesterday at Laie.

Sarah Welty, Britt Edman, Natalie Cude, Margaret Sekona and Hailey McKee scored for the Seasiders (10-4, 6-2).

Caitlyn McNeely had the only goal for the Sea Warriors (3-12, 1-7).

» Dustin Daley scored two goals and Marcos Medina and Omar Garcia scored one each to push Hawaii-Hilo past Chaminade yesterday in Honolulu.

Garrett Barker had the lone goal for the Silverswords (1-14-1).

The Vulcans improved to 8-4-2.

» Adele Letro scored three goals to lead Hawaii-Hilo past Chaminade 5-0 in women's soccer yesterday in Honolulu.

Megan Pachecano and Melissa Grant also scored for the Vulcans (11-4).

Marissa Minor made nine saves for the Silverswords (1-10).

 

Koppenberg, Thorberg take the Rose

Western Washington's Jake Koppenberg and Cal Baptist's Malin Thorberg finished as medalists in the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate golf tournament yesterday on the Big Island.

Koppenberg fired an 8-under 64 in the third and final round to wind up at 14-under 202 and finish three strokes ahead of Valdosta State's Cole Willis at the Mauna Lani North Course.

St. Edwards beat Valdosta State in the men's team competition in a playoff after both schools finished at 21-under 843.

Christopher Armanini was Hawaii-Hilo's top finisher. He tied for ninth at 5-under 211. The Vulcans placed fifth.

Thorberg shot 3-over 219 on the way to a 3-shot edge over Western Washington's Kaitlin Parker for the women's individual title at the Waikoloa Kings' Course.

Thorberg also led her Cal Baptist squad to the team championship at 909, with Western Washington five strokes back.
