2 HIFF awards go to isle-related films

Two out of the three final awards in the 28th annual Hawaii International Film Festival have gone to films from close to home.

These movies were selected by the HIFF audience, through ballots distributed at the first screening of each eligible film. The winners:

» Documentary: “;Patsy Mink: Ahead of the Majority,”; directed by Kimberlee Bassford, about the life of the late U.S. congresswoman from Hawaii.

» Narrative feature: “;Departures,”; directed by Takita Yojiro, part of the “;Spotlight on Japan”; showcase, about a cellist who finds a new purpose in life when his orchestra shuts down and he must go to work at a mortuary.

» Short film: “;Chief,”; directed by Brett Wagner, about a Samoan chief who flees to Hawaii after the death of his daughter.

The 2008 festival ran Oct. 9 to 19 at the Regal Cinemas at Dole Cannery.


Hail Halloween at carving contest

Architects Hawaii's annual pumpkin-carving exhibition takes place on Halloween, with the public invited to survey the intricate results and vote for a favorite.

Jack-o'-lanterns will be carved from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday in the American Savings Bank lobby, 1001 Bishop St. They'll be on display until 4 p.m.
