2 wanted after SUV purposely hits man

HILO » Big Island police are looking for a man and a woman in connection with the attempted murder Sunday night of a man on a motorcycle.

Called to the scene after 11 p.m. in the sprawling Ocean View subdivision, 45 miles south of Kailua-Kona, police learned that the victim, 33, had been intentionally struck by a gold-colored sport utility vehicle driven by a man, 34.

The victim was riding out of his driveway on a motorcycle when he was hit, they said.

The driver got out of his SUV and hit the victim on the head with a rock, police said. He then drove away with a female passenger, 28, they said. The victim knew both people in the SUV.

The victim was taken to Kona Community Hospital and later taken to the Queen's Medical Center on Oahu. Police found the SUV the next day at 7 a.m. near the scene of the attack, they said.

Maui boy, 17, dies in motorcycle crash

WAILUKU » A Maui teenager died yesterday after the motorcycle he was riding crashed into another vehicle in Haiku.

Keoni Magliato, 17, was driving the motorcycle at about 4:41 p.m. when he crashed into the vehicle at the intersection of Kauhikoa Road and Kauhikoalani Place in Haiku, police said. He was not wearing a helmet.

Police Lt. Robert Hill said the driver of the vehicle was a 33-year-old Haiku man but declined to release details of the crash, pending further investigation. Hill said neither the driver of the other vehicle, nor his two passengers were injured.

Magliato's death was Maui County's 17th traffic fatality this year, compared with 19 at the same time last year, and the eighth fatal crash involving a motorcycle this year.

Man dies after falling into ocean

HILO » A Big Island man apparently drowned shortly after midnight Sunday when he fell into the sea while fishing at South Point, authorities said. Police identified the victim as William Evangelista, 53, of Pahala.

Evangelista was fishing with a friend on the cliffs facing the sea on the leeward side of the point when he fell because of poor lighting, authorities said. Police and fire rescue personnel said in initial reports the man was “;in distress.”;

He died before rescue personnel reached the scene a half-hour later. They recovered the body about 50 feet from shore, they said.

Teen arrested for purse snatching

Police arrested a 17-year-old robbery suspect who allegedly stole a woman's purse at a bus stop early today.

Police said that at about 12:15 a.m., a 20-year-old woman was sitting at a bus stop in Waianae when the suspect, a teenage boy, approached her and demanded her purse. The woman complied and the suspect fled.

Police found the suspect nearby and arrested him on suspicion of second-degree robbery. Police recovered the purse.

Woman helps nab car-theft suspects

An alert Waipahu woman helped police catch two suspected car thieves.

The woman saw two men drive into her Kuhaulua Street apartment complex yesterday. Later, at about 4 p.m., she saw the same men driving into the parking lot in separate cars and called police.

Officers checked the cars and learned that each had been reported stolen. Police arrested the men, ages 27 and 38, on suspicion of auto theft and outstanding warrants.
