Cash for candy

Dentist Wilfred Miyasaki will pay trick-or-treaters for their excess Halloween candy. He's offering $1 per pound of candy brought to his office, 1139 Bethel St., from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

All the candy collected will be sent to troops overseas, along with toothbrushes.

Grants available

The Hawaii Women's Legal Foundation is accepting grant applications for projects that help improve the legal status and welfare of women and children in Hawaii. Typical grant awards range from $500 to $5,000 but can be larger.

Primary criteria: projects that improve access to the legal system; reduce child abuse, domestic violence and sexual abuse; increase financial independence; and improve the health, education and welfare of women and children.
