Elimimian breaks tackles record
Hawaii linebacker Solomon Elimimian finished with a game-high 10 tackles, becoming the program's career leader along the way.
Elimimian now has 373 stops; he passed former UH defensive lineman Levi Stanley, who held the previous record of 366 since finishing his career in 1973.
Elimimian tied the record on Nevada's second possession by teaming with R.J. Kiesel-Kauhane on a sack. He then made the record his own on the Wolf Pack's next drive with a hard hit on Vai Taua.
“;The tackle record is big to me,”; Elimimian said. “;It doesn't just highlight this season or this game, it highlights my four years here and it starts with the decision God made to bring me to Hawaii.”;
UH defense gets on the board
Those scoop-and-score drills finally paid off for the Warriors.
UH defensive ends David Veikune and John Fonoti teamed up for the defense's first touchdown of the season, giving the Warriors the lead in the first quarter.
Veikune, making his first sack of the season, knocked the ball from Colin Kaepernick's hands. Fonoti picked up the loose ball and took it 9 yards for his first career touchdown.
Wolf Pack hurry UH quarterbacks
Nevada sophomore defensive ends Dontay Moch and Kevin Basped got in the hair of Hawaii quarterbacks all night.
Moch had eight tackles, including four for losses with three sacks, and Basped made five tackles, three of which went for losses with two sacks.
But the Wolf Pack defensive unit didn't get the job done when the game was on the line.
“;Defensively, we didn't make the stops in the second half,”; Nevada coach Chris Ault said. “;The defense was excellent in the first half, but put us in some tough spots in the second half.”;
Meanwhile, Saint Louis graduate Jared Silva-Purcell, a Wolf Pack sophomore linebacker, started his first college game in place of injured Joshua Mauga.
Silva-Purcell made two tackles.
Mouton morphs into slotback
Senior Ryan Mouton's Hawaii debut on the other side of the ball proved to be a successful one.
The cornerback turned slotback had five catches for 58 yards, including a 16-yard out-route reception to get the Warriors' game-winning drive started with less than 1:30 to play.
His transition was classified information at Hawaii practices leading up to last night's game.
“;I'm going to need a lot of work or whatever,”; said Mouton with a shrug. “;I just wanted to get out there and do my best, that's all the coaches asked me to do. I felt like the offense started a little slow but kind of turned it up. We got things done.”;
Mouton starred on both sides of the ball at Katy High, leading his team to the Texas 5A Division II championship.
