Halloween 'life' from the deep

There's no shortage of creepy, slimy things in the deep as Halloween revelers will find at Maui Ocean Center, where visitors can get acquainted with a procession of unusual and freakish marine animals that won't need costumes to blend in on Friday.

Naturalist presentations during “;World of Weird”; week, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday, focus on some of the ocean's most bizarre creatures and their wide array of disguises and defenses. Creature Feature cards will also be distributed at each presentation so you can take fish lore home with you. On Friday there will also be candy to take home.

Other activities:

» Creepy craft stations: At the Undersea Cave, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday and Friday. Children 3 and older will be able to make Halloween-themed craft items.

» Underwater pumpkin carving: Friday demonstrations at the Open Ocean and Black Tip exhibits. The finished pumpkins will be on view in the Undersea Cave.

Pacific Whale gives islanders discount

Hawaii residents can enjoy ocean fun at 50 percent off on weekends through mid-December, thanks to the Pacific Whale Foundation.

The special is available to kamaaina with valid Hawaii ID, for snorkel tours to Molokini and Lanai, along with Pacific Whale Foundation's Wild Dolphin Encounters, and Sunset Dinner and Cocktail Cruises.

The cruises must be taken on Saturdays or Sundays to qualify for the discount. Advance reservations are required, by calling 249-8811, ext. 1, or (800) 942-5311, ext. 1.

Kids age 6 and under go free on the snorkel tours to Molokini and Lanai, and on the Wild Dolphin Encounters, provided that there is one free child per each paying adult. On all the cruises, there are special rates for ages 12 and younger.
