CaneFires crush Sharks in HWB

Detroit Tigers prospect Kyle Peter had three hits and Miles Durham of the Pittsburgh Pirates added three RBIs to help the West Oahu CaneFires over the Honolulu Sharks 8-2 yesterday in Hawaii Winter Baseball at Hans L'Orange Park in Waipahu.

Cyle Hankerd of the Arizona Diamondbacks was also perfect, stroking a double and a triple in his two at-bats.

Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Kyle Bloom threw five shutout innings with eight strikeouts and only allowed one hit. He lowered his ERA to 1.80 for the season.

'Iolani product Kala Kaaihue went hitless with a pair of strikeouts and a fielding error for the Sharks. Former Hawaii catcher Matt Inouye, who prepped at Mid-Pacific, went 0-for-2 with a walk. Roosevelt and Hawaii Pacific product Kaimi Mead pitched a scoreless seventh inning for Honolulu, walking a batter and striking out one. He lowered his ERA to 2.25.

No. 13 Boise keeps BCS hopes alive

SAN JOSE, Calif. » Kellen Moore and his Boise State teammates showed San Jose State that the 13th-ranked Broncos are still the class of the WAC.

Moore threw two touchdown passes and Ian Johnson ran for two scores to help Boise State keep its bid alive for a berth in a BCS game by beating the Spartans 33-16 last night in a matchup of the top two teams in the Western Athletic Conference.

San Jose State (5-3, 3-1) nearly derailed bids for undefeated seasons by the Broncos (7-0, 3-0) in their last two visits to Spartan Stadium and hoped to be able to complete the job this year with what coach Dick Tomey considers the best team he's had here.

 

Arizona names interim coach

TUCSON, Ariz. » Arizona selected Russ Pennell as the interim replacement for retired coach Lute Olson.

The 47-year-old Pennell is a former assistant to Rob Evans at Arizona State and served last year as a Sun Devils radio analyst.

The university turned to Pennell, who has never been a college head coach, after failing to reach an agreement with Olson's top assistant, Mike Dunlap.

Dunlap will remain on the staff as an assistant.

The announcement came one day after the 74-year-old Olson stepped down after 24 seasons with the Wildcats.

 

Rainbow Wahine fall in final minutes

Utah State broke a 1-1 tie that lasted nearly an hour and a half on a goal with just over seven minutes remaining in the game to capture a 2-1 twin over he University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine soccer team.

Candice Clark scored the game-winning, unassisted goal for the visiting Aggies who remain undefeated in the Western Athletic Conference.

Taryn Fukuroku had Hawaii's lone goal, her fifth of the season.

 

UH doubles team successful at ITA

The University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine tennis team completed another round at the ITA West Regional Championships in San Diego, C.A. with an Alyssa Nafarrete and Natasha Zorec doubles, 8-4 win over the University of Arizona.

Of the five singles players and two doubles teams representing Hawaii, three matches ended in favor of the Rainbow Wahine, an Anja-Vanessa Peter singles consolaton second round match, a Melinda Wong singles consolation third round match and the doubles victory.

The tournament will continue this week.

Sea Warrior volleyball wins in 3

The Hawaii Pacific University volleyball team beat Grand Canyon University 25-20, 25-19, 25-21 yesterday at St. Andrew's Priory, improving to 6-4 in the Pac-West Conference.

Shawntell Jones led the Sea Warriors with a .636 attack percentage. Grand Canyon out-blocked HPU 9-5.
