Nevada's Silva-Purcell welcomes return home

This was something new for Jared Silva-Purcell (Saint Louis, '06).

But with the ball in his hands and open field ahead, the Nevada linebacker simply let instinct take over.

“;It felt like time froze,”; Silva-Purcell said of his 47-yard interception return for a touchdown to cap the scoring in the Wolf Pack's 44-17 win over Utah State last Saturday. “;I couldn't really grasp what was happening. It was shocking.”;

Fresh off the highlight moment of his young career in Reno, Silva-Purcell is looking forward to a return to Aloha Stadium tomorrow when the Wolf Pack face Hawaii in a Western Athletic Conference game.

Silva-Purcell is running second at middle linebacker for the Wolf Pack, backing up senior Joshua Mauga. The sophomore has played in all seven games this season, recording four tackles and last week's interception.

Silva-Purcell wasn't doing a whole lot of running at all last season, when he tore the meniscus and MCL in his knee. After two surgeries, he spent most of the summer rehabbing in Reno, further heightening his anticipation for this weekend's visit.

“;It's been way too long,”; said Silva-Purcell, who is also looking forward to catching up with his cousin and former Saint Louis teammate Elliott Purcell, now a Warriors defensive lineman.

Kalaheo graduate and defensive lineman Mike Andrews is also on the roster, but is expected to redshirt this season after transferring from Arizona Western College.

» Idaho freshman running back Kama Bailey (Damien '08) scored the first two touchdowns of his collegiate career in a 46-14 loss against Louisiana Tech. Bailey caught touchdown passes of 33 and 27 yards in the first half and returned six kickoffs for 104 yards. Sophomore linebacker JoJo Dickson (Baldwin '07) had eight tackles for the Vandals.
