Posey leads Waikiki in HWB win

Buster Posey drove in four runs with three hits to lead Waikiki past West Oahu 8-5 yesterday in a Hawaii Winter Baseball game at Hans L'Orange Park.

Andrew Brackman got the win for the BeachBoys (8-11), yielding one earned run on five hits. He struck out five in improving to 2-3.

Greg Burns' two hits included a double, and he drove in two runs for the CaneFires (10-9).

» In the second game, John Castro singled in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to lead North Shore to a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Honolulu.

The Sharks led 2-0 on Shintaro Masuda's two-run homer in the third, but the Honu broke through with a run in the seventh, tied it in the eighth and won on Castro's walk-off hit.

Shawn Nottingham (1-1) got the win with two strikeouts in an inning of hitless relief.

The Honu climbed to 7-12, and the Sharks fell to 13-6.

Defending champs advance at OCC

Defending champions Andrew Feldmann and Larry Stubblefield advanced to this morning's semifinals of the Aloha Section PGA 4-Ball Match Play Championships at Oahu Country Club.

The finals are also scheduled to be contested today.

The teams of Shane Abe/John Hearn, Kevin Carll/Michael Castillo and Jerry Mullen/Damien Jamila also made it through yesterday's first two rounds.

Colorado State wins, Hawaii 17th

Colorado State won the Sycuan Collegiate Invitational men's college golf tournament yesterday, with Hawaii finishing in a tie for 17th. CSU was 27 under par in the three-round tournament at Willow Glen Golf Course in El Cajon, Calif., with UH shooting 30 over.

Dustin Garza of Wichita State shot 16 under for the individual victory. Robert Berton was the first Hawaii golfer, tied for 28th at 2 under after a third-round 69.

Punahou's Keeno going to Amherst

Kristin Keeno, a senior defensive specialist at Punahou, has given a verbal commitment to play volleyball at Amherst College (Mass.).

Keeno visited Amherst during spring break in March. She revisited the campus two weeks ago.

“;It's a small school where I can talk very easily with the teachers. It feels like a safe and close community there,”; she said yesterday.

Keeno has played with the Jammers Volleyball Club since she was 10.

Amherst, an NCAA Division III member, is 16-4 overall and 4-1 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Under coach Sue Everden, now in her 23rd season, the Jeffs were 30-4 last year and reached the NCAA quarterfinals.

Hilo golfers third at Sonoma tourney

Chico State won the Sonoma State Invitational men's golf tournament at Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club yesterday with a three-round total of 838. Sonoma State was second at 852 and Hawaii-Hilo was third at 863.

The Vulcans' Zady Ari finished tied for 18th individually at 216 after rounds of 72, 68 and 76.
