Fire yesterday aboard a tugboat at a Honolulu Harbor pier damaged equipment and furnishings in a day room where off-duty crew members rest.

An employee of Hawaiian Tug & Barge who fought the afternoon fire was taken to a Honolulu hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. The man, in his 40s, was in serious but stable condition when he was taken by ambulance from the scene, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for Emergency Services.

The Honolulu Fire Department fire boat responded to the 3:41 p.m. alarm along with four other fire companies. The fire was under control 12 minutes later and reported extinguished at 4:10 p.m., said Capt. Terry Seelig.

No one was on board the 75-foot vessel Mamo when the fire started, Seelig said. “;Two employees went on board when they heard the alarm. They were attempting to control the fire when fire companies arrived. One man complained of difficulty breathing.”;

The cause is under investigation.
