Sale day set for UH hoops tickets

Season tickets for the Hawaii men's and women's basketball 2008-09 season go on sale tomorrow.

The total cost for lower-level men's season tickets is $370 ($270 plus a $100 contribution for premium seating), the same price as last season despite two more home games (20) at the Stan Sheriff Center. Upper-level season seats are $200 for adults and $40 for UH students.

The adult season package for the UH women costs $60, a reduction of $15 from last year.

Individual game tickets go on sale Oct. 27 for the men and next month for the women.

Rapoport leads Sharks in HWB

Cardinals prospect James Rapoport hit a solo home run and drove in another run to help the Honolulu Sharks thump the Waikiki BeachBoys 7-2 in Hawaii Winter Baseball yesterday at Les Murakami Stadium.

Honolulu starting pitcher Connor Graham allowed one run in 3 1/3 innings to get the win. The Sharks' bullpen of Roy Merritt, Junior Guerra and Andy Graham gave up only one more run the rest of the way to secure the victory.

Waikiki starter Waldin Joakin, a San Francisco prospect, suffered the loss by allowing four runs in five innings, including the dinger to Rapoport.

» The West Oahu CaneFires scored three runs in the seventh inning for a 7-6 win over the North Shore Honu at Hans L'Orange Park.

Mark Hallberg's two-run single tied the score at 6, and Chris Hatcher drove in Cyle Hankerd with an infield single for the winning run.

Heinemann and Lajola advance

University of Hawaii tennis players Sascha Heinemann and Dennis Lajola advanced to the singles round of 16 at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association West-South Region Championships yesterday.

Heinemann, a senior, blew by Gautam Vaidyanathan of UC Irvine in straight sets 6-1, 6-0.

Lajola, a sophomore, beat Eugene Brazdil of UCLA 6-4, 6-2.

Junior Andreas Weber fell to Moodi Kamel of Pepperdine 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.

In doubles, Heinemann and Weber dropped their quarterfinal match to USC's Robert Farah and Steve Johnson 8-3.

BYUH's Ma takes third in ITA

Brigham Young University-Hawaii men's tennis player Rong Ma captured third place in the NCAA Division II section of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Small College Championships at Mobile, Ala. yesterday.

Ma defeated Ales Svigelj of Barry University, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

» Seasider women's tennis player Elwen Li fell to Helena Van Eysendeyk of California (Pa.), 6-4, 7-6 (10) and finished fourth in the women's bracket of the tournament yesterday.

Li and partner Jenny Chen withdrew from the doubles championship yesterday rather than be put in a position to play on a Sunday in violation of BYU-Hawaii and Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints policy.

Vulcans sweep Silverswords

The University of Hawaii-Hilo swept by Chaminade in a women's volleyball match in Hilo last night, 25-23, 25-17, 25-23.

Junior outside hitter Josimara Pinheiro hit .303 with 16 kills to lead the Vulcans, who improved to 16-4 overall (6-4 PacWest).

Senior outside hitter Mary Claire Bolo added 14 kills and senior middle blocker Fabiane Seben chipped in with 10 kills.

Trina Kauliakamoa led the Silverswords, who fell to 9-11 (4-6 PacWest), with 12 kills.
