In a game dominated by running backs, Kaimuki quarterback Nainoa Hiapo's arm was the difference.

Hiapo finished 10-for-16 for 129 yards and tossed a 2-yard touchdown pass to Trendt Marsom on fourth down in the fourth quarter that proved to be the difference in a 21-13 victory over Waipahu last night in the opening round of the Oahu Interscholastic Association playoffs at Kaiser Stadium.

Kaimuki (5-4) advances to play defending state champion Leilehua next week with the confidence that it can not only run the ball, but throw it as well.

“;When our quarterback is on fire, we can do some things,”; Kaimuki coach Darren Johnson said. “;(Hiapo) was throwing the ball well and our receivers came up big for us.”;

Hiapo only had 39 passing yards at halftime, but saw a weakness in the Waipahu secondary and exploited it in the second half. Four of his seven second-half completions went to wide receiver Chris Fiamate, who finished with six catches for 68 yards.

“;They were playing a lot of cover 2 and we were just taking the underneath routes,”; Hiapo said.

His touchdown pass to Marsom with 5 minutes remaining put the Bulldogs up 21-7. Four plays later, on fourth and 12, Waipahu's Troy Matautia, who played quarterback for injured starter Joshua Lacar in the second half, scored on a 60-yard run to pull the Marauders within eight after a missed extra point.

Waipahu forced Kaimuki to punt in the final minute, but the ball hit a Marauder and was recovered by Isaac Lani, who also had a key interception, to end the game.

“;We've had some tough games where we lost on big plays in the last 30 seconds,”; Johnson said. “;Our defense has been big all year and did it again.”;

The Bulldogs jumped on Waipahu early, driving 65 yards in nine plays on their opening drive to take a 7-0 lead on a 6-yard run by Hiapo.

Waipahu accounted for 108 yards in the first half, with 52 coming on a touchdown run by Lacar that answered the Bulldogs' touchdown.

On the first play from scrimmage following Hiapo's score, Lacar kept the ball on the option and bounced outside, racing past two Bulldogs defenders to go untouched for the score to tie the game at 7.

From there, it was a battle of defenses, as neither team scored the rest of the half.

The Bulldogs fumbled a punt at midfield and Waipahu recovered, setting up a drive that took the ball inside the Kaimuki 3. But on fourth down, Lacar fumbled the snap and the Bulldogs dodged a golden opportunity by the Marauders to take the lead at the end of the half.

“;It never comes down to one play, but that sure would have helped us swing the momentum our way for the second half,”; Waipahu coach Sean Saturnio said.

On the final play of the first half, Lacar was tackled near the sideline and injured his left hand. He did not return, and Matautia played quarterback in the second half.

“;It forced us to play some guys in positions they weren't used to, but stuff like that happens,”; Saturnio said.

Matautia finished with 98 yards on 16 carries and Lacar added 47 yards as Waipahu totaled 203 yards on the ground, but only 6 yards passing.

Kaimuki's Justin Paderes finished with 100 yards on 21 carries and Tevita Aholeilei had 60 yards on the ground and a touchdown.

Anuenue 41, Kalani 12
Ikaika Gante rushed for 172 yards and three touchdowns and Anuenue defeated Kalani last night at Kaiser Stadium to finish the season with a win.

Anuenue (1-8, 1-7 OIA White) rushed for 393 yards, with most of it coming from Gante and Kainoa Keana'aina. Keana'aina added 89 yards and two touchdowns on only four carries.

Kalani (0-8, 0-8), which had forfeited its previous four games, put a team together for its final game of the season. Matt Shishido finished with 110 combined rushing and receiving yards, including a 40-yard touchdown run, and quarterback Michael DiSeria carried the ball 21 times for 73 yards and a score.

Kaipo Cullen returned a punt 76 yards for a touchdown for Anuenue, which scored 28 points in the first quarter and snapped an eight-game losing streak.

The Falcons took advantage of three Anuenue turnovers to keep the game close the rest of the way. Kalani finished with 249 yards from scrimmage.
