Man is indicted on rape charge

An Oahu grand jury has indicted a 32-year-old man Ewa man who allegedly raped a 13-year-old girl in her Waianae home.

Keith Richard Crail was indicted Tuesday on five counts of first-degree sexual assault and two counts of third-degree sexual assault. The indictment says Crail, if convicted, could be subject to sentencing as a multiple offender.

The girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by Crail on Sept. 4 after she invited him into her home, police said.

Crail, known to the girl as “;Kawika,”; was introduced to her by a mutual friend, police said. The girl told police that as soon as he walked in the door, he took off her clothes and sexually assaulted her repeatedly, according to the indictment and a police affidavit.

The girl took down the man's truck's license plate number as he left, and called police, who traced the truck to Crail. The girl picked Crail out of a photo lineup on Sept. 5, and he was arrested Oct. 9 at in Ewa Beach.

Crail's bail had been set at $50,000.

 

Student video contest offers cash

Middle and high school students are invited to compete in C-SPAN's 2009 StudentCam video documentary competition, which will distribute $50,000 in prizes.

The contest asks students to produce a five- to eight-minute documentary on the topic: “;A message to the new president: What is the most urgent issue for the new president to address after taking office, and why?”;

Entries must represent more than one point of view and include C-SPAN video. Students can upload entry forms and videos online at http://www.studentcam.org.

The deadline for entries is 5 p.m. EST on Jan. 20. Winners will be announced on March 10.

The best overall entry will get $5,000. There also will be multiple cash prize awards of $250, $500, $750, $1,500 and $3,000. One $500 prize will go to the best international entry. Videos must be the original work of students, though teachers may provide guidance and critiques.

 

Kids' IDs offered at McDonald's

Parents of children 12 years old or younger may obtain a free identification card at Pearlridge McDonald's Pearl Kai on Oct. 25.

The Keiki ID card includes a child's photo, fingerprints and contact information. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. State Rep. K. Mark Takai, the project's coordinator, said the card “;should give parents the peace of mind knowing that they have all the appropriate information the police need in the event of an emergency.”;

 

Forum on Ala Wai watershed set

A meeting to discuss water resources management in the Ala Wai watershed will be held 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Washington Middle School cafeteria.

The environmental impact statement public scoping meeting will discuss the Ala Wai Watershed Project, a joint effort of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources and the city's Department of Environmental Services.

The project is investigating and evaluating ways to restore ecosystems and reduce flood hazards in Makiki, Manoa, Palolo, Saint Louis, Kapahulu, Diamond Head, McCully, Moiliili, Ala Moana and Waikiki.

Mental health festival scheduled

Entertainment and information about mental illness will be presented at Mental Health America of Hawaii's eighth annual “;Beyond the Blues”; Festival Oct. 25 at the Pearlridge Center.

Local blues bands will play from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Uptown Center Court (Macy's side) in Aiea, 98-1005 Moanalua Road. They will include Boogie, Jeff Said No, Friends of Adam and Coconut Joe. Each band will play for one hour, and representatives of community organizations and consumer groups will speak between sets.

Participants will include the Adult Mental Health Division, Argosy University, Hawaii Disabilities Rights Center, Hawaii Families as Allies, Hawaii Psychiatric Medical Association, Helping Hands Hawaii, Kahi Mohala Behavioral Health, Mental Health Kokua, Mental Health Transformation State Incentive Grant, National Alliance on Mental Illness and United Self Help.
