Boat runs aground on Makua reef

A 40-foot sailboat ran aground a reef at Makua Beach, fire Capt. Terry Seelig said.

No one was injured, and the boat did not break up or lose any fuel, he said late yesterday afternoon.

The boat ran aground at 11:38 a.m. about 10 feet offshore, Seelig said.

All those on board the recreational sailboat made it safely to shore, Seelig said.

The owner is responsible for moving the boat, Seelig said.

Man, 18, arrested in holdup of guard

Police arrested an 18-year-old Palolo man Monday night who allegedly robbed a security guard at the National Marine Fisheries Service building on Dole Street in Manoa.

The man approached the 25-year-old security guard from behind and allegedly began choking him about 3:30 a.m. Monday, and threatened him with a knife.

Police said the man allegedly took all the private security guard's personal belongings and held him against his will for 20 minutes.

The guard received minor abrasions, police said.

The man was arrested at 9:09 p.m. Monday on suspicion of first-degree robbery and kidnapping.

Victim of crash found 2 days later

A man believed to have been the victim of a fatal one-vehicle crash on Saturday was not found until Monday, according to Big Island police.

At 2:45 p.m. Monday, state Department of Transportation workers found a vehicle off Hawaii Belt Road near the 5-mile marker in Panaewa, just outside Hilo. The vehicle was found in heavy brush.

Police found a body pinned inside, later identified as Jerome K.K. Kalani Sr., 35, of Pahoa. Investigation revealed that the victim was traveling toward Keeau on Hawaii Belt Road in a 2001 pickup truck when he apparently lost control, police said.

The truck ran off the right side of the road, struck a “;No Parking”; sign, swerved to the left into the median, struck a tree then dropped about 10 to 15 feet below the highway, according to police.

Police said the crash occurred sometime early Saturday. Kalani was wearing a seat belt, police said. Police added that they believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
