Rainbows picked low in polls

The Hawaii men's basketball team got little love from coaches and media members today, finishing seventh and eighth, respectively, in the Western Athletic Conference preseason polls.

WAC coaches picked the Rainbows seventh, one spot better than the media. Nevada, Utah State and New Mexico State took the top three spots in each poll.

Sophomore forward Armon Johnson of Nevada was the coaches' pick for player of the year; the media chose senior forward Gary Wilkinson of Utah State. Hawaii did not land a player on either of the all-WAC teams.

In the women's polls, Hawaii was picked seventh by the coaches and sixth by the media.

Lelepali commits to Southern Utah

Punahou senior Courtney Lelepali has orally committed to play volleyball at Southern Utah.

Lelepali, a multi-position player with the Buffanblu, will play libero for the Thunderbirds.

Punahou (14-1) is currently ranked No. 3 in the Star-Bulletin Girls Volleyball Top 10. Lelepali also plays in the offseason for Jammers Volleyball Club.

Fakaosi is conference player of week

Brigham Young-Hawaii's Losaline Fakaosi was named as the conference's volleyball player of the week yesterday.

Fakaosi led the Seasiders to two road wins over Notre Dame de Namur to earn the honor for the second time this season.

Fakaosi, a freshman outside hitter from Salt Lake City, knocked down 27 kills in the two matches and averaged 4.5 kills per set while hitting .317. She also added two blocks and three service aces.
