Hit-and-run kills Honolulu woman

A 23-year-old woman died at a hospital yesterday after a hit-and-run on the H-1 freeway early yesterday morning.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office identified the woman as Emmergine Fuamoli of Honolulu.

Police said Fuamoli, a front-seat passenger in a 2000 Nissan sedan, had been arguing with the 26-year-old male driver at about 4:20 a.m. when she grabbed the steering wheel, causing the car to crash into the center median of the H-1 westbound lanes.

No one, including a 26-year-old rear-seat passenger, was seriously injured in that crash.

Then Fuamoli got out of the car, about 62 feet west of the Pali overpass, and was hit by a speeding 2005 Honda sedan, police said. She was taken in critical condition to the Queen's Medical Center, where she died.

The 36-year-old driver of the Honda fled the scene but was located on Houghtailing Street at about 6 a.m., police said.

He was arrested on suspicion of leaving the scene of an accident, a felony, and negligent homicide. Police released him yesterday pending investigation.

Speed and alcohol were factors in the crash on the part of the hit-and-run driver, police said.

Police also arrested a 20-year-old man from a third vehicle on suspicion of interfering with the arrest. He was also released yesterday.

Fuamoli is the 34th traffic fatality on Oahu in 2008, compared with 50 at this time in 2007.
