Tahiti crew faster than ever

Shell Vaa of Tahiti remains the gold standard of men's long distance canoe paddling.

The club made it three wins in a row yesterday at the 41-mile Molokai Hoe race from Hale O Lono Harbor to Duke Kahanamoku Beach with another record-breaking time of 4 hours, 38 minutes, 35 seconds.

Shell Vaa's margin of victory was more than 10 minutes over fellow Tahitian club Venus Vaa (4:48:59).

Lanikai Canoe Club, the last Hawaii team to win in 2005, was the top local finisher in third place with a time of 4:51:50. » Read full story

Sharks' Ka'aihue hits 2 dingers

Kala Ka'aihue hit two home runs to lead the Honolulu Sharks past the North Shore Honu 6-3 in Hawaii Winter Baseball yesterday at Hans L'Orange Park in Waipahu.

Ka'aihue, a Braves prospect who prepped at 'Iolani, hit a solo shot in the second inning and a three-run blast in the eighth inning. Former Hawaii Pacific pitcher Kaimi Mead earned the save for the Sharks with a perfect ninth inning.

Honolulu (10-3-1) won its fifth straight game, while North Shore dropped to 4-9-1.

» Starting pitcher Mitsuo Yoshikawa threw five scoreless innings, but the Waikiki BeachBoys played the West Oahu CaneFires to a 1-1 tie in 10 innings at Les Murakami Stadium.

West Oahu had runners on first and second with one out in the 10th, but Waikiki pitcher Jeremy Papelbon got out of it.

Waikiki and West Oahu both sport 6-7-1 records. The league will take today off so that its players can tour the Big Island.

Chun captures wrestling world title

Hawaii Olympian Clarissa Chun captured the gold medal in freestyle wrestling at the Women's World Championships last night in Tokyo.

Chun relied on her defense in pulling out a gritty 1-0, 1-0 win in the final over Jyldyz Eshimova-Turtbayeva in the 105 1/2-pound class.

“;It's definitely exciting to win a world title,”; Chun said. “;It's great to come back and win after what happened at the Olympics. It feels great to be called a world champ, and I want more.”;

Chun placed fourth at the Beijing Olympics.

Rainbow Wahine in scoreless tie

Hawaii and Fresno State played to a scoreless tie in Western Athletic Conference women's soccer yesterday in California.

The match went to overtime, but neither team scored.

The Rainbow Wahine (4-5-4, 0-1-1) outshot the Bulldogs (5-7-2, 1-0-1) 11-4.

Kua captures Turtle Bay tournament

TJ Kua, a University of Hawaii golfer, shot a 1-over 73 to win the Turtle Bay Amateur golf tournament on the George Fazio Course yesterday, finishing with a two-round total of 140 after his blistering 5-under 67 on Saturday.

Kua beat defending champion Bradley Shigezawa, who had a 4-under 68 yesterday, by two shots.

Sea Warriors blank Silverswords

Nicole Bleidistel and Tami Kalaiwaa scored a goal apiece to lead Hawaii Pacific to a 2-0 victory over Chaminade in women's soccer yesterday at Kaneohe.

Katrina Torres and Christiana Alcobisa had one assist each for the Sea Warriors, who improved to 3-7.

The Silverswords dropped to 1-9.

» Four different players scored as Hawaii Pacific defeated Chaminade 4-0 in men's soccer yesterday at Kaneohe.

Max Anton, Adam Ricke, Austin Gibbons and Sven Blauth scored for the Sea Warriors, who improved to 5-3-1.

The loss dropped the Silverswords to 1-12-1.

» Brigham Young-Hawaii's Adam Maciejewski was named the conference's soccer player of the week yesterday.

Maciejewski scored two goals in a 2-2 tie against Hawaii-Hilo last week.
