Refunds due from Oceanic after glitch

Purchasers of the pay-per-view live telecast of the Hawaii at Fresno State football game on Oct. 4 will receive a refund for the first quarter, Oceanic Time-Warner announced in a news release from UH yesterday.

The outage caused around 10,000 subscribers to miss most of the first quarter of Hawaii's 32-29 victory.

The production crew in Fresno experienced technical difficulty with the satellite transmission to Hawaii, according to yesterday's news release.

A letter will be sent to all pay-per-view customers explaining how to credit their Oceanic account or apply the credit to a donation to the UH athletics scholarship fund.

“;We truly regret this unforeseen and unfortunate technical problem,”; Oceanic vice president Norman Santos said. “;We know this caused anxiety and consternation for UH fans, so we want to offer our customers a credit to thank them for their patience and understanding. Also, if they choose, they can donate the credit to the UH scholarship fund and we'll make a check presentation at the Idaho football game on behalf of our pay-per-view customers.”;

Blocks building on FG attempts

After going close to five years without a blocked field goal, Hawaii has two in its last two games.

Keala Watson blocked Brad Oestriecher's 53-yard attempt in the second quarter, a week after Antwan Mahaley knocked down a kick against Fresno State.

“;(Mahaley) got one for the defensive ends, so I wanted to get one for the tackles,”; Watson said of his second career block.

Louisiana Tech's Allen Gilbert got in on the act, blocking a Tim Grasso punt in the third quarter.

Ex-UH football coaches honored

As part of the homecoming festivities, former Hawaii coaches were honored prior to the game. Taking part were Jimmy Asato, Colin Chock and Don Botelho, who helped restart the football program in 1962 after the program was terminated the previous year.

At halftime, Jim Bolte donated a charitable trust of $2.195 million to the Na Koa Football Club.

Offensive limeman Ginlack injured

Hawaii offensive lineman Brysen Ginlack left the game in the second quarter with back spasms, and his status is day-to-day. He was replaced by Raphael Ieru at left guard.

Watson sat out the second half as a precaution after getting his bell rung. Malcolm Lane left the game after being hurt on a deep pass in the second quarter, but returned after halftime.

Allen-Jones lays big hit on Tech QB

UH senior C.J. Allen-Jones greeted Louisiana Tech backup quarterback Ross Jenkins with a hit he won't forget.

Allen-Jones picked up the first sack of his career in the fourth quarter, greeting Jenkins on his second play of the game with a sack that resulted in a 7-yard loss.

“;Coach called up the right blitz and I was surprised I got through so fast,”; Allen-Jones said. “;I didn't know it was (the backup), I just play the game of football, I don't recognize the numbers.”;

Allen-Jones has moved back and forth between defensive line and linebacker in his career, and is beginning to look comfortable at defensive end.
