Sabers look sharp

By

POSTED: Saturday, October 11, 2008

The Campbell Sabers did a huge favor for one Oahu Interscholastic Association White Division rival last night while dealing a solid blow to another.

Campbell quarterback Lalo Respicio tossed for 282 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Sabers over Kalaheo last night, 34-15, in OIA White division action at Kailua. The win sealed the White's top seed for Radford, which is expected to win today by forfeit over Kalani.

Kalaheo (7-2, 6-2) was going for the outright top seed with win on senior night, but hopes quickly disintegrated with a quick scoring drive by Campbell (7-1, 6-1) to start the game and a subsequent turnover and another Respicio TD for a quick 14-0 lead.

“;We work hard in practice; the linemen, they block real well,”; said Respicio, a 5-foot-11 senior. “;They give me time back there. I take my drops, and everything is quick. Hit the receivers quick, and that's how we do it. We just gotta keep working hard every day, can't take nobody lightly.”;

Respicio, who finished 25-for-42 with no interceptions, hit four different receivers for touchdowns in the first half as the Sabers built a 27-7 halftime lead.

Brandon Ahuna, Arthur Aiwohi, Derrick Santiago, and Daniel Masifilo were beneficiaries of Respicio's accuracy for scoring strikes. The quarterback punched in a 1-yard keeper in the third quarter to go up by 27.

The Sabers also sent a message to a possible OIA White playoff opponent.

“;Kalaheo might be small in numbers, but these guys got big hearts,”; said Campbell coach Amosa Amosa. “;They got some athletes—my hat's off to Coach (Chris) Mellor.”;

Campbell remained unbeaten with Respicio as its signal-caller. He missed the Sabers' lone loss with sickness.

There was some question of rust, as Campbell hadn't played in three weeks because of a bye followed by a Kalani forfeit.

Those questions were quickly answered as Respicio tossed darts to his receivers in the Sabers' spread offense one after another.

Mellor doesn't plan to change much in the Mustangs' veer-option attack for a possible playoff matchup at some point with the Sabers.

“;We're in the playoffs, we're happy, we had a successful regular season,”; Mellor said. “;We're disappointed tonight, but proud in the overall result.”;

The Mustangs honored their seniors before the game.

Campbell improved to 3-0 against Kalaheo in meetings going back to 2004.
