Punahou tightens grip on No. 1 rank

POSTED: Saturday, October 11, 2008

Punahou may have backed its way into this week's No. 1 ranking, but the Buffanblu left no doubt they belong there with a convincing win over Damien.

Robert Toma caught three touchdown passes in the first quarter and Cayman Shutter threw for 144 yards and four scores in less than a half of work as the Buffanblu defeated the Monarchs 38-12 last night at Aloha Stadium.

No Division II team was going to knock off a D-I foe in this week's Interscholastic League of Honolulu doubleheader. Six days after then-No. 1 Saint Louis was stunned by 'Iolani, the second-ranked Crusaders routed Pac-Five 52-7 in the early game as the two D-I teams combined to outscore their D-II counterparts 90-19.

In the nightcap, the Buffanblu (6-1, 3-1) didn't give Damien (5-4, 2-4) any time to think about an upset. Punahou scored on its first four possessions, as Toma caught touchdown passes of 37, 39 and 10 yards. Robert Izuta added a 33-yard field goal and Stabren Caires returned a punt 52 yards for a score as the Buffanblu scored 31 points in the first quarter.

“;With what happened with 'Iolani and Saint Louis, we wanted to make sure we came out, were focused and get after it,”; Punahou coach Kale Ane said.

The Monarchs were held to 19 total yards in the first half as the Buffanblu defense, led by senior Manti Te'o, shut down Damien's rushing attack. Te'o had four tackles, and the Monarchs had only three first downs and 1 rushing yard at halftime.

“;You're always happy when you only give up (only) 1 yard of anything,”; Ane said.

Punahou, which leapfrogged Saint Louis for the No. 1 spot in this week's Star-Bulletin Top 10 despite being manhandled by the Crusaders 40-19 earlier this season, was firing on all cylinders from the outset.

Shutter was perfect on the first drive, completing all four passes for 55 yards and a score to give Punahou a touchdown less than 2 minutes in.

After Izuta's field goal made it 10-0, the Buffanblu needed only two plays on their next drive for Shutter to find Toma from 39 yards out for his second touchdown. A 37-yard punt return by Caires set up Shutter's third touchdown pass to Toma.

Shutter's day ended with a 30-yard touchdown strike to Brent Fukushima, which was his first reception of the season. Shutter finished 9-for-13 passing and added a 13-yard scramble in an efficient half of work.

“;The O-line did a good job on their part and the receivers took care of their job too, so it was pretty easy for me,”; Shutter said.

Damien quarterback Stanton Pilialoha completed four of nine for 20 yards before leaving the game after taking a big hit in the second quarter. Backup Breysen Lee found Austin Dawson for a 64-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter and added a 1-yard run scoring run in the fourth. He finished 5-for-13 for 119 yards.
