Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children turns 100 next year and the 2009 Hawaii's Miracles Calendar is on sale as fundraiser and part of the anniversary. A picture of a child born at Kapiolani, some needing expert care to pull through, is featured each month. As one of the sidelights, pro golfer Tadd Fujikawa, who made the cut as a 16-year-old amateur in the 2007 Sony Open, is mentioned as being born at Kapiolani 14 weeks premature, weighing only 1 pound and 15 ounces. He was given a 50 percent chance of survival and spent his first three months in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit. The calendar was produced by the hospital and Island Style Images. More than 100 families attended photo sessions with Joanne Barratt of Island Style Images. The public voted online on 30 finalists to choose the pictures of the children. The photos are treasures. The winners pictured are: On the cover, Katie Carlos; for January, Nalani Chock; February, Nigel Palalay; March, Jamie, Caitlyn and Brianna Arce; April, Joanna Nakasone; May, Ariana Cazimero; June, Kodey Deuz; July, Kyle Rivera (his twin brother, Troy, is in a smaller photo); August, Kaetlyn Amine; September, Cohen and Larken Nakasone; October, Kira Goode; November, Aaliyah Jefferson; and December, Danziell Pandal-Gaboya. The calendar is priced at $15 and sold at the hospital's gift shop and all Foodland and Sack N Save stores. It can be purchased online at www.kapiolani.org. Add $6 for mailing. The hospital gets all the money from sales as production and services were donated ...
