Gaddis to walk-on at UH

Former Star-Bulletin Fab 15 player Courtney Gaddis has transferred home to join the Hawaii women's basketball team as a walk-on.

Gaddis, a Kalani graduate who scored a career-high 18 points off the bench for Division III Whitworth (Spokane, Wash.) against Willamette last year, joins Keisha Kanekoa and Leilani Galdones as the third local Rainbow Wahine player for the 2008-09 season.

“;She wanted to come back, asked to walk-on and we put her on the roster,”; coach Jim Bolla said.

The 5-foot-11 Gaddis can practice with the team, but will redshirt this season because of NCAA transfer rules. She has three years of eligibility remaining.

Gaddis averaged 13.3 points, nine rebounds and three blocks per game for the Falcons her senior year. She averaged five points for the Pirates as a true freshman last year, connecting on 47.4 percent of her 3-point shots (9-for-19).

Forward/center Julita Bungaite, one of six players in the 2008-09 Rainbow Wahine recruiting class, has not joined the team for eligibility reasons, though Bolla is hopeful she will be able to come aboard at midseason.

Sharks shut down BeachBoys

Four Honolulu pitchers limited Waikiki to a run on three hits and the Sharks beat the BeachBoys 3-1 yesterday at Hans L'Orange Park.

Josh Stinson, a New York Mets prospect, pitched four scoreless innings for the victory.

The Sharks (6-3) were led at the plate by Dominic Brown and Darin Holcomb, who had two hits apiece.

Yonder Alonso, a Cincinnati Reds prospect, hit his first home run for Waikiki (4-6) with a blast over the right-field fence in the ninth inning to ruin Honolulu's shutout attempt.

Spencer tops Lajola in tennis final

Wil Spencer of Texas A&M defeated Hawaii's Dennis Lajola 6-4, 6-2 in the final of the qualifying draw at the D'Novo/ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.

Lajola and his Rainbow Warriors teammates play at the ITA West-South Regionals in Pepperdine, Calif., next Thursday.

Dixie State drops UHH in volleyball

Cami Johnson had 14 kills to lead Dixie State to a 26-24, 25-18, 19-25, 11-25, 15-7 women's volleyball victory over Hawaii-Hilo last night at St. George, Utah.

Fabiane Seben had 19 kills and hit .571 to lead the Vulcans (14-6, 3-3).

Dixie State improved to 7-9 and 3-3.

Hawaii-Hilo routs Chaminade in soccer

Adele Letro had two goals and an assist and Alyssa Salvador added two goals to lead Hawaii-Hilo to a 5-0 women's soccer win over Chaminade yesterday in Hilo.

The Vulcans (6-3, 1-0) also got a goal from Jessica Snell.

The Silverswords fell to 1-7 and 0-4.
