No-dog rule suspended for PetWalk at Magic Island on Sunday

Question: I've heard that the Humane Society's PetWalk will be held on Magic Island Sunday, but dogs aren't normally allowed in the park. How is this possible?

Answer: This hard-won, once-a-year exemption was extended to the Humane Society thanks to Mayor Mufi Hannemann and the Honolulu county parks division in support of the society's work and the many thousands of supporters who have been collecting donations to help the nonprofit group.

Q: How do I join the PetWalk?

A: The Humane Society invites the public to share in this 2-mile walk through Magic Island and Ala Moana Park on Sunday, as it's the only opportunity in 2008 when enjoying the morning with your dog in this park is allowed.

All dogs must be on a leash.

The walk starts at 8 a.m., with registration beginning at 7 a.m. Call 946-2187 or visit hawaiianhumane.org for advance pledge forms.

Q: What about taking my dog to the beach at other times?

A: The beaches along Ala Moana Park and Magic Island are city beaches. Dogs are not allowed on any city beach or on select state beaches. Figuring out which beaches are city- and state-managed can be complex. To make it simple for dog owners, the Humane Society has posted a list of dog-friendly beaches on its Web site at hawaiianhumane.org.
