McMackin would enjoy lei love every game day

Question: I am a fan of University of Hawaii football and watch every game on pay-per-view TV. I am saddened to see that Coach Greg McMackin doesn't wear the traditional lei at each game. Where's the Aloha Spirit for our great football coach? Fans, boosters, where's your support?

Answer: You might have noticed that McMackin was wearing a lei at the UH-Fresno State game last Saturday.

That was a notable first this season, so much so that he was asked about it at both his post-game news conference and “;Coach Mack”; show on KGMB-9.

The lei he wore in Fresno was given to him by UH cheerleaders, he said.

“;I love leis,”; McMackin told us, “;and I'd be honored to wear a lei.”;

As it is, “;I've gone around the whole state and everybody's given me leis, but at the games, nobody's given me a lei.”;

When he does receive a lei, he says he'll often “;give it to a lady ... (a way of) giving your aloha back. So I want to do it the right way and I don't think I should go down and buy one (for myself) at 7-Eleven or something,”; he said, laughing.

He surmised there just hasn't been the opportunity for fans to present him a lei on game day. “;Everybody's been great and I just think it's been the circumstance,”; McMackin said.

Fans take note: “;I'm superstitious,”; he joked, “;so now I need a lei to win games.”;

Q: I wrote to you about neighbors who park their broken truck in the street, taking up scarce on-street parking. You recommended I file an abandoned vehicle complaint. I did call police. They came and talked with my neighbors, who moved their truck two feet, then moved it back the next day. It's again been sitting there for months. When I talked to them about this, they cursed and told me not to park there. When I was forced to park there once, I found my tires were flattened. HPD was no help, as neither they nor I witnessed the crime. What can I do to have them remove this truck and prevent them from damaging other cars?

A: At this point, there's not much you can do to free up the space.

As you noted, you have to have proof or witness your neighbors damaging a vehicle for police to take action on that point.

According to motor vehicle records, the truck is registered until February 2009, and has a current safety inspection, expiring this month, said Dennis Kamimura, administrator of the city Motor Vehicle & Licensing Division.

Kamimura said the vehicle is not abandoned, so the abandoned vehicle ordinance can't be used to resolve what's obviously a parking issue.

“;It is not our responsibility to mitigate disagreements between neighbors,”; he said.

Yours is a common complaint, sometimes involving neighbors who hog the on-street public space fronting their homes by alternately parking two of their vehicles in the same spot, or parking in such a way as to take up two parking spaces.

But, unfair or not, there's nothing in the law about people monopolizing a space, although they are supposed to move a vehicle at least once every 24 hours. Once they do that, authorities tell us, it will not be cited or towed.
