Wahine move up to No. 6 in poll

The Hawaii women's volleyball team moved up a spot in yesterday's AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 poll.

The Rainbow Wahine (12-2), winners of 11 straight, are at No. 6.

The top three teams remained the same, led by unanimous No. 1 Penn State (16-0). At No. 2 is Nebraska, followed by Texas.

Hawaii returns to action Friday against Louisiana Tech.

 

Silverswords to play on CBS

Chaminade's men's basketball team will be on national television when it visits Dixie State College in Utah on Jan. 3.

It will be the first of nine NCAA Division II basketball teams broadcast on the CBS College Sports Network. The game is scheduled for 10 a.m. Hawaii time.

The Silverswords begin their season in the opening round of the EA Sports Maui Invitational on Nov. 24 against North Carolina on ESPN.

 

UH tennis players advance in Tulsa

Hawaii tennis players Sascha Heinemann, Andreas Weber and Dennis Lajola advanced yesterday to the second round of the qualifying draw of the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.

Heinemann, a senior, swept Christian Hansen of Tennessee 6-2, 6-4, and Lajola beat Chris Nott of Arkansas 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. Weber bounced back to beat Daniel Buikema of Alabama 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

The UH players are two wins away from qualifying into the main draw of the tournament. Heinemann and Weber both made it last year.

 

Swanson second at Canada judo tourney

Hawaii's Melinda Swanson finished second at the Rendez-Vous Canada judo tournament held last weekend in Montreal.

After losing to Alyssa Caughy of Canada in the over-78kg finals at the U.S. Open last month, Swanson opened her round-robin division with a win by ippon over Caughy. In her next two matches, Swanson defeated Deborah McKay of Canada and Janelle Snider of New York.

Swanson earned the silver medal after losing her final match to Lenuta Berinde of Canada.

Seasiders beat Sea Warriors in golf

The Brigham Young-Hawaii men's golf team beat Hawaii Pacific for the first time in four tries yesterday, winning 294-299 at Turtle Bay's Fazio Course.

BYUH's Derek Hall and Doug Bischoff each shot 1-under par 71s to tie for medalist honors in the dual match. Charlie Renfro led the Sea Warriors with an even-par 72.

The teams will play again Oct. 15 at Ewa Beach Golf Course.
