‘Waikiki nei’ stage show goes on hiatus until holiday season
“;Waikiki nei,”; which opened in the Royal Hawaiian Showroom in August with high-tech production values and high-attendance expectations, is shutting down until the holidays.
“;It's just the economic times and the falling off of tourism,”; Chief Operating Officer Todd Dougall said. During the hiatus they'll revise the show based on comments they've received, he said. “;We still want to work on the show, and that's what we're going to do in going forward.”;
The last performance was Friday.
“;Waikiki nei”; offered a mix of cultural performances, historical re-enactment and high-tech mechanics, such as a depiction of big-wave surfing onstage. Admission was $49 to $99.
LEVEL4 Nightclub and Ultra Lounge, which shares the showroom, will continue regular operations, 10:30 p.m. to 4 a.m. Wednesdays to Saturdays. The space will also be available for concerts and other events. Call 931-6200.
Storytellers visit Hawaii libraries
A pair of traveling storytellers will visit public libraries throughout the state over the next few weeks, sharing an international selection of tales.

Women’s festival covers the world
Celebrate all it means to be female at the Women's World Festival, Friday and Saturday at the Hawai'i Convention Center.
The festival will offers workshops on topics such as self-defense, public speaking, drawing, music recording and copyrighting, cosmetics, self-publishing, cooking and voice techniques.
Included will be cultural acts, music performances and a silent auction to benefit the Hawaii Foodbank and its Food 4 Keikis program. On Saturday a fashion show featuring 2 Couture and Kristian Lei will be held.
Women of Our World, a group that fosters creativity among women, is sponsoring the event.
Tickets are $12 for a two-day pass, $45 including the fashion show, free to those under age 21 with a paying chaperone. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster outlets and through Women of Our World, 341-8614. Attendees are encouraged to come in cultural outfits.
Book sale benefits charter schools
The Alu Like Native Hawaiian Library is hosting a Charter School Book Fair featuring island themes.
The sale runs Monday through Oct. 17 at Alu Like, 458 Keawe St. in Kakaako, offering a selection of fiction and nonfiction titles for adults and children. Hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Cultural demonstrations and presentations from guest authors will be held in the evenings. Book sales will benefit 14 charter schools statewide.
Alu Like serves native Hawaiians with services including early childhood education, child care, employment, vocational education and a library. Call 535-6700.
Tickets available for K-Man show
Hawaii Theatre is taking reservations for five school matinee performances of “;Dan Kamin: The Pantomime Man.”;
Kamin - often remembered for his role as K-Man on “;Mister Rogers' Neighborhood”; - taught comedy moves to Robert Downey Jr. (for the film “;Chaplin”;) and Johnny Depp (for “;Benny and Joon”;).
His show is geared toward children in kindergarten to grade 6.
Performances are scheduled for 9:15 and 11 a.m. Nov. 17 and 18, and at 9:15 a.m. Nov. 19. Tickets are $5.
