Three Hawaii high school seniors have been selected as semifinalists in the National Achievement Scholarship program.
Jasmine and Nicole Casart from Hilo High School and Bertram Booker of Punahou School are among 1,600 black students competing for about 800 scholarships worth more than $2.6 million to be awarded in the spring.
The National Achievement Program, started in 1964 to recognize promising black students, has distributed more than $91 million in scholarships to more than 27,800 students.
University of Hawaii-Hilo graduate student Kathy L. Seiber is one of 22 students chosen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for a Greater Research Opportunities fellowship.
More than 156 applicants competed for the prestigious awards, which provide funding to help students complete graduate degrees in environmental studies.
Hawaii Women Lawyers has installed new officers and directors: Emi L.M. Kaimuloa, president; Joanne L. Grimes, vice president and president-elect; Zale Okazaki, treasurer; and Shellie Park-Hoapili, secretary. The immediate past president is Lauren R. Sharkey.
