CaneFires rattle Sharks in HWB

The West Oahu CaneFires scored six runs in the first inning en route to an 8-1 victory over the Honolulu Sharks last night in Hawaii Winter Baseball at Les Murakami Stadium.

Caleb Gindl hit a three-run homer in the opening inning, and Greg Burns and Cyle Hankerd drove in two runs each to lead the CaneFires (5-2).

The Sharks (4-2) only managed five hits.

» The North Shore Honu scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat the Waikiki BeachBoys 7-6 last night at Hans L'Orange Park.

Waimanalo boxer wins at nationals

Waimanalo's Bruno Escalante Jr. won the 2008 National PAL Amateur Boxing Tournament in Oxnard, Calif., last night.

Escalante defeated Michael Ruiz in the 112-pound four-round final bout.

Escalante, a southpaw who fights with the East Oahu-Waimanalo Boxing Club, won three bouts in the tournament.

“;He looked great. He had a nice left hook and combination to the body and the head,”; Blane Yoshida, Escalante's coach, said about the victory over Ruiz. “;Brian Viloria (ranked No. 1 in the WBO) was the last Hawaii boxer to win this tournament, and he stopped by to see the semifinals.”;

Malloe, Kurisu and Kim at QB Club

University of Hawaii defensive line and special teams coach Ikaika Malloe heads the list of speakers at the Honolulu Quarterback Club weekly luncheon tomorrow at the Pagoda Hotel's International Ballroom.

Malloe will talk about his coaching career prior to arriving in Manoa and give insight on Hawaii's defensive line and special teams play while taking questions on the Warriors' 32-29 victory over Fresno State yesterday.

Also scheduled to speak are Duane Kurisu, chairman and chief executive officer of Hawaii Winter Baseball and Joel Kim, coach of the Palolo Boxing Club.

The luncheon is open to the general public and begins at 11:30 a.m. with the program starting at noon.

Seasiders top Silverswords in soccer

Brigham Young-Hawaii outshot Chaminade 20-9 en route to a 2-1 men's soccer victory yesterday at Saint Louis School.

Adam Maciejewski delivered the game-winning goal for the Seasiders, who improved to 2-7-1 for the season.

The Silverswords dropped to 1-9-1.

» Brigham Young-Hawaii won a 1-0 defensive battle against Chaminade in women's soccer yesterday at Saint Louis School.

Britt Edman scored the lone goal for BYUH (7-3).

Chaminade dropped to 1-6.

Chaminade overcomes two-set deficit

Chaminade fell behind by two sets and then rallied to beat Grand Canyon 18-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-17, 15-12 in women's volleyball yesterday in Phoenix.

Five Chaminade players had double-digit kills, led by Trina Kauliakamoa with 15 and Samantha Miller with 14.

The Lady Silverswords improved to 9-9. The Antelopes dropped to 9-8.

» Hawaii Pacific rallied back from a 2-0 deficit to beat Notre Dame de Namur 22-25, 23-25, 25-18, 25-21, 15-9 in women's volleyball at Belmont, Calif., last night.

Kelly Balanay led the way for the Sea Warriors (2-3) with 19 kills.

Notre Dame de Namur fell to 0-9.
