NORTH SHORE

Head-on collision injures 2

Two people were critically injured in a head-on collision yesterday afternoon that shut down Kamehameha Highway for several hours near Haleiwa.

Police said at about 12:47 p.m., a 22-year-old Wahiawa man driving a gold 1996 Toyota Camry toward Wahiawa on Kamehameha Highway collided into a 1997 Nissan Maxima driven by a 54-year-old Salt Lake woman.

Police said the Camry was reported speeding and driving erratically, veering in and out of the Haleiwa-bound lane.

About a mile east of J.P. Leong Highway, the Camry veered into oncoming traffic and collided into the 1997 Nissan Maxima, police said.

Both drivers were taken to the Queen's Medical Center in critical condition, but the man was upgraded to serious condition.

Police said speed was a factor in the crash, but have not yet determined if alcohol played a role.

Police shut down both directions of Kamehameha Highway between Kamananui Road and the Haleiwa Bypass as they conducted their investigation.
