SJSU win over UH leaves Lightsy speechless
POSTED: Friday, October 03, 2008
San Jose State offensive lineman Steve Lightsy (Kahuku '04) was so caught up in the Spartans' win over Hawaii on Saturday that he wasn't able to put it into words as he sat in the visiting locker room.
“;For us, words can't even say,”; Lightsy said. “;Sorry, I don't know what to say.”;
Lightsy saw playing time at guard and helped the Spartans offense hold off a stout Warriors defense that made it hard for San Jose State to move the ball.
What made the win extra sweet for Lightsy was beating old friends and teammates. Lightsy played with Inoke Funaki and Brysen Ginlack at Kahuku and was teammates with defensive end David Veikune at Fresno City College.
“;It was fun going against players I've played with and grown up with,”; Lightsy said. “;It's so gratifying to know that we came over here and won. Hawaii is a good team. It's tough to win here.”;
After spending three years at a community college, Lightsy finally made it to a Division I school. In 2006, he was named a JC GridWire first-team All-American and a Region II all-state selection. He helped Fresno City College share a conference title in his freshman season and was a key part of the 2006 team that won the Valley Conference championship.
