COMING UP

Dog walk kicks off Love-a-Dog month

October is Love-a-Dog month, and the Hawaiian Humane Society is celebrating.

To begin, an 8 a.m. walk tomorrow to the Makapuu lighthouse will celebrate the return of dogs to the path. The state had temporarily banned dogs, citing irresponsible behavior of a few owners, but the ban has been lifted. Gather at the new sign near the trail parking lot that reminds dog walkers to pick up after their pets and keep their dogs leashed.

Next comes the 2-mile PetWalk 2008, starting at 8 a.m. Oct. 12 through Magic Island and Ala Moana Park. Collect pledges to benefit the society, and after the walk there'll be pet games, entertainment and refreshments. Visit www.hawaiianhumane.org.

Adopt a dog this month and receive an adoption starter kit that includes a 5-pound bag of Nutro food and a coupon for one dose of heartworm prevention.

Also: Pick up an Adopt-A-dog T-shirt this month at Ala Moana or Pearlridge Crazy Shirts stores and receive a coupon for a microchip for your dog. A portion of the sales of the shirts at any time goes to the Humane Society.
