Smoke gets in your eyes this season as we get closer to holidays and more women start experimenting with fall's new smoky eye, built on taupe, slate and pewter grays, even blues and greens with a touch of charcoal.

SMOKY EYES, THE EASY WAY

        For those who don't want to bother with eye shadows, highlighters and steadying their hands for an application of eye liner, there is a shortcut.

ColorOn offers a lineup of Eye Envy instant eye shadow applicators. The come in the form of hygienic, hypoallergenic press-on transfers in dozens of colors and patterns, including the vaunted smoky eye in the Smokey Kit ($25 for five pairs of applicators).

Touch the patch to the eyelid to transfer the waterproof, mineral-cream shadows, and finish with GetSet Powder included in the kit.

Those who know how to create the look themselves also find the applicators useful when traveling, by cutting down the number of products that need to be packed.

It's available at Sephora.

“;It's a different take on the black smoky eye,”; said Emily Massa, a Sephora Pro Beauty Team Expert who visited the Ala Moana and Pearlridge stores recently to share fall trends with shoppers. “;Black is not gone. It's a classic look that never goes out of style, but it's a very intense look that's not for everyone. Gray is more wearable for most people. They can wear it to work as well as evenings out.”;

To reinforce the air of sophistication, the grays are matte, with none of the glitter, iridescence and shine of years past. And to keep attention on the eyes, the gray is balanced with a pale, nude lip.

It's one of three major color trends for the face this fall, covering the range from smoky eyes for the classic sophisticate to bright pops of neon color for a youthful, playful look.

Massa's favorite look, and likely the easiest transition for women, will be to change their lip color from summer's pink and peachy hues to the deeper, dramatic plums and berry colors suited to fall's wardrobe. At the most extreme, these can include hues with brown undertones.

“;The makeup trends are based on the runway. Designers were really showing dark lips, done in black or deep blue with more of a gothic vibe. Going with berry and plum tones is an interpretation of those dark looks, a way to make them more wearable for everybody,”; she said. “;It's a great look if you're in a hurry. Use a bit of eye liner and put on a dark lip, and you're good to go.”;

Countering the dark look is a move in the extreme opposite direction, with bursts of neon pinks, melons, tangerines, violets and yellows that have been popular in Japan for years, and here only with a handful of makeup addicts.

“;This is the first time for Americans to incorporate color on the eyes, cheeks and lips as a total look. Before, they'd pick one area to concentrate on,”; Massa said.

All the trends can be incorporated to suit an individual's comfort level, such as smoky eyes that go from a light day look to layered for evening intensity.

“;It doesn't have to be super-intense color,”; Massa said. “;You can go for lip gloss that looks bright in the tube but goes on really sheer, or you can keep your eye color very simple but use a single line of bright eye liner and pair it with a brighter lip.”;

Sephora's setup, with testers for nearly every product, makes it easy for shoppers to experiment.

“;A lot of women are squeamish about color. They're apprehensive about trying it on, but it's just makeup. It comes off as easily as it goes on,”; Massa said. “;I think they should be less intimidated by color and have more fun.”;
