'Design in Asian Textiles' exhibition is on view at Robyn Buntin

An exhibition of “;Design in Asian Textiles”; is on view through Saturday at Robyn Buntin of Honolulu.

Featured are textiles and related arts of Japan and China, exploring designs and techniques associated with Japanese textile woodblock prints, “;katagami”; (hand-carved stencils), kimono, “;kasuri”; and Chinese robes, embroideries, opera print designs, Miao minority garments and 19th-century pictorial scrolls of fine silk.

The collection is drawn from Robyn and Judy Buntin's personal collection of kasuri acquired more than 25 years ago in Japan, as well as several private collections of fine-carved 19th-century katagami used in the process of resist-dyeing textiles. Many of the stencils are made of layers of handmade mulberry paper laminated together and waterproofed with persimmon tannin. The stencils embody Japanese design features such as a preference for asymmetry, a flattened pictorial space, the stylization of natural forms and combination of abstract and naturalistic elements.

The exhibition will be on view 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Saturday, at 848 S. Beretania St. Call 523-5913.

Reserve your place at Hui Makaala show

Tickets are on sale for the annual Hui Makaala luncheon fashion show taking place Oct. 26 at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel.

The scholarship fundraiser will feature designs by Harari, a 30-year old silk-print design house in Los Angeles that produces Asian-inspired apparel; Ryan Roberts, who creates simple, sophisticated garments geared toward a young professional audience; and the local boutique Tapestries by Hauoli.

The event will open with 9 a.m. boutique sales, noon lunch and the 1 p.m. fashion show. The deadline for reservations is Oct. 14.

Military Monday at Windward Mall

Windward Mall has launched a new “;Military Monday”; program, which offers 15 percent discounts to Hawaii's military community on the first Monday of each month at more than 30 participating mall eateries and retailers.
