UH releases baseball schedule

Four teams that advanced to the 2008 NCAA Super Regionals, including defending national champion Fresno State, highlight the 2009 Hawaii baseball schedule released yesterday.

The Rainbows open Feb. 20 at Les Murakami Stadium with a four-game series against UC Irvine.

The nonconference home schedule features Mississippi State, Loyola Marymount and Coastal Carolina before WAC play begins April 3 at home against San Jose State.

Hawaii plays in two tournaments on the road, including the Dairy Queen Classic in Minneapolis, with all games taking place in the Metrodome. The Rainbows have games against Pac-10 schools Oregon, Oregon State, Washington and Arizona State.

The Rainbows close out the WAC with a series at Fresno State May 7-9. Hawaii hosts the WAC tournament May 20-24.

Moon’s 10th inning hit lifts Honu

Kyu Hyun Moon hit a two-out single up the middle in the bottom of the 10th inning to score Chris Carter from third base and give the North Shore Honu an 11-10 victory over the Honolulu Sharks last night at Hans L'Orange Park.

It was Moon's fifth single of the night in the Honu's first Hawaii Winter Baseball victory of the season. He finished 5-for-7, and his final hit capped a two-run rally.

North Shore reliever Ben Swaggerty, who allowed one run in the top of the 10th, earned the win.

Tony Cruz went 4-for-6 with three doubles and three RBIs for the Sharks.

Wahine golfers 16th at Heather Farr

Notre Dame took the team title and Kay Hoey of Long Beach State won the individual championship at the Heather Farr Memorial Invitational in Boulder, Colo.

Hawaii finished 16th, led by junior Corie Hou who tied for 16th with a 1-over par 217 for the three-round tournament.

Dixie tops Chaminade in volleyball

Katie Luna led Dixie State with 13 kills in a 25-20, 25-17, 25-19, volleyball sweep at St. George, Utah, yesterday.

Trina Kauliakamoa led the Silverswords with 12 kills.

Chaminade fell to 8-7, and Dixie State improved to 4-7.

» Hawaii-Hilo outside hitter Josimara Pinheiro was named PacWest player of the week.

She led the conference with 31 kills last week.

Hawaii-Hilo golfers tie for second

Hawaii-Hilo tied for second in the NCAA Division II Preview men's golf tournament at Loomis Trail Golf and Country Club in Blaine, Wash.

Central Oklahoma won the 54-hole tournament, shooting 859. UHH was tied four shots back with Sonoma State.

Tyler Bishop of Colorado-Colorado Springs shot 5-under 208 for medalist honors.

The Vulcans' Logan Goulding closed with back-to-back 68s to finish tied for sixth at even-par 213.
